The Data Science team within Smart Home Devices is a part of the ML innovation organization with roots in computer vision, machine learning, and natural language processing. This role involves using a broad array of quantitative methods to find insights from user behavior, and designing approaches to evaluate unstructured data. This includes crafting creative techniques to analyze audio & video datasets, design metrics to understand user behavior, and evaluate performance of machine learning models. We value team members who can quickly prototype & iterate on designs to high-quality implementations.

Description

As a Sr Data Scientist for Smart Home Devices, you will use statistical analysis of unstructured & structured data to deepen our understanding of how people use devices in the home environment including; iPhone, HomePod, Mac, and new products yet-to-be-released, and across use cases from music to home automation and general knowledge discovery. You will be responsible for:

Developing instrumentation & measurement framework that guide iterative product improvement for ML-based user experiences.

Employing a diverse toolkit of analytical approaches, methodologies, frameworks, and technical strategies to uncover opportunities to improve user experience of ML-based products.

Developing tools with scalable analytical and engineering approaches that drive a privacy-first strategy for analytical insight.

Investigating product usage to identify weaknesses and opportunities to make the product better.

Working cross-functionally with Engineering, Machine Learning, and Product partners across the AIML ecosystem to ship ML-based features.

Minimum Qualifications

Proficiency analyzing unstructured data, specifically video & audio signals, for object detection, pattern recognition, feature extraction, and segmentation.

Expertise in designing metrics and conducting metric change analysis to measure impacts to user experiences.

Ability to analyze large & complex datasets using SQL and Python.

Self-motivated and curious with creative and critical thinking capabilities and drive to figure out and improve how things work.

High tolerance for ambiguity. You find a way through. You anticipate. You connect and synthesize.

Strong verbal and written communications skills with demonstrated experience in authoring & presenting analytical insights via papers & presentations.

Experience in cultivating partner relationships and influencing decisions with data.

Master’s Degree in a technical or quantitative field such as Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, Economics, or Physics.

Preferred Qualifications

Familiarity with deep learning frameworks like PyTorch.

Experience with shipping ML features and products.

Pay & Benefits

At Apple, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The base pay range for this role is between $135,400 and $250,600, and your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.

Apple employees also have the opportunity to become an Apple shareholder through participation in Apple’s discretionary employee stock programs. Apple employees are eligible for discretionary restricted stock unit awards, and can purchase Apple stock at a discount if voluntarily participating in Apple’s Employee Stock Purchase Plan.
