Job Description

The Department of English at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) invites applicants for a tenure-track Associate or Full Professor in English and Director of Core Writing (DCW) to begin July 1, 2025. The successful candidate will assume the administration of our well-developed (approximately 250 sections per year) Core Writing Program (CWP), which was designated an NCTE/CCCC Program of Excellence in 2022. This position comes with a six-year commitment to a 10-month contract, stipend for off-contract work, and a 1/1 teaching load in Rhetoric & Writing Studies; the position is additionally supported by a half-time administrative assistant, an Associate Director, an Assistant Director, and 3 Graduate Writing Program Administrators.

Responsibilities of the DCW include:

Curriculum development and assessment for the CWP

Observation and professional development for CWP-assigned faculty, including roughly 35-50 graduate teaching assistants (GTAs), 15 teaching-track professors, and 10 adjuncts

Coordination and collaboration with the Director of the Core Curriculum, Director of the University Writing and Speaking Center, the Director of Concurrent Enrollment for the Core Writing Program (approximately 250 sections per year), and the Director of the Writing and Speaking in the Disciplines Program

Service on the English Department Planning Committee, Core Board, and Writing & Speaking Initiative committee.

After six years, should the successful candidate wish to step down as director, they will transition into a 9-month tenure-track position with a 2/2 teaching load and no stipend.

Required Qualifications **Candidates will be hired at the level that is comparable to experience

Terminal Degree in Rhetoric & Composition or Technical and Professional Communication and demonstrated continuing relevant professional growth

Experience directing First-Year Writing programs

Substantial publication record in Rhetoric & Composition/Writing Studies or Technical & Professional Writing

Evidence of attention to creating culturally inclusive environments and collaborative relations with various stakeholders in previous administrative or teaching work

Preferred Qualifications

Experience directing a First-Year Writing program at an R1 land-grant with a diverse student population

Established publication and teaching record in Multilingual Writing, English Language Learning, and/or Technical and Professional Writing

The Department of English, housed in the College of Liberal Arts, offers a diverse range of fields of study including literature, language and linguistics, professional and public writing, and creative writing. We also offer a minor in cinema and media studies. Our graduate programs include PhD concentrations in literature and Rhetoric & Writing Studies, an MFA in creative writing, and MA degrees in literature, RWS, and Public Engagement. The department houses the Core Writing program for the university and maintains close relationships with other core and affiliate programs including Core Humanities and the Department of Gender, Race, and Identity Studies.
