THE POSITION:

The Alameda County Water District located in Fremont, CA is seeking to hire an Engineer I/II (Environmental/Water Quality) to work in the Operations and Maintenance department. Under the supervision of the Water Production Division Engineering Supervisor, this position will perform a variety of professional environmental engineering work in connection with air quality, environmental discharge, and hazardous materials activities as well as provide engineering support to the District main cleaning program and other water quality related programs.Engineer I

is the entry level in the engineering series. Under close to general supervision within a framework of established policies and procedures, incumbents perform a variety of engineering and administrative tasks of limited to moderate difficulty. Assignments are given in specific terms and are subject to frequent review while in progress and upon completion.Engineer II

is the intermediate level in the engineering series. Under general supervision within a framework of established policies and procedures, incumbents perform a variety of engineering and administrative tasks of moderate difficulty. Assignments are given in general terms and are subject to periodic review while in progress and upon completion. There is some latitude for independent judgment.

There is currently one vacancy for this position.

The recruitment is being conducted at both levels of the classification series. The vacancy will be filled at one of the two levels.

SALARY

: Depending on qualifications and experience, this position may be filled at any level. The annual salary ranges for the respective levels are as follows: Engineer I $108,264- $131,599, and Engineer II $127,364 -$154,817, plus excellent benefits.Examples of Duties:Ability to apply engineering principles in the administration and execution of environmental regulatory compliance programs such as air quality (CalARP/CARB/BAAQMD), hazardous materials storage and disposal (RCRA/DTSC), and wastewater and potable water discharge permitting (e.g., NPDES, sanitary sewer).The primary duties of this position are focused on environmental compliance program management and water quality support functions, and this position can perform as a liaison for regulatory agencies. Knowledge of:

Engineer I : environmental engineering principles, terms, practices and technology related to basic chemistry and laboratory procedures; engineering mathematics through calculus; engineering methods, and design processes; basic statistical principles and methods of analysis; computer programs and languages and engineering applications; pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations; safe work practices as they relate to the position and the ability to identify workplace hazards and/or unsafe conditions and take appropriate action to correct same.

Engineer II : environmental engineering principles, terms, practices and technology related to basic chemistry and laboratory procedures; engineering mathematics through calculus; engineering methods, and design processes; statistical analysis methods and design processes; computer programs, languages and engineering applications; pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations governing water quality and environmental compliance; safe work practices as they relate to the position.Education and Experience:

Possession of a Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with a major in an engineering curriculum which is accredited by the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology, or a related field; and

Engineer I:

No work experience required.

Engineer II:

Two (2) years, within the past ten, of practical engineering experience.

An advanced degree in an accredited engineering curriculum may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

Possession of a Water Distribution Operator Grade 2 certification and Water Treatment Operator Grade 2 certification is highly desirable.

Work experience with environmental regulatory compliance programs such as air quality (CalARP/CARB), hazardous materials storage and disposal (RCRA/DTSC), and wastewater and potable water discharge permitting (e.g., NPDES, sanitary sewer) is highly desirable.

Additional Requirements:

Must possess a valid California Driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record.
