Position Description

Yale University’s Department of Statistics and Data Science (S&DS) is seeking to hire several faculty members at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor, to start in July 2025. One of the tenured positions should prioritize real-world applications of S&DS, while the rest are open to all areas of the field. For the applied position, ideal candidates will engage with data-driven research in fields of inquiry beyond S&DS and pursue analytic developments that benefit applied research in those fields. Dynamic collaborations with applied practitioners are welcome, and joint appointments with other departments of interest may be available.

In 2018, Yale announced that Data Science would be one of its top five priority areas for new investments in Science. In accordance with this plan, the S&DS Department at Yale has experienced remarkable growth, adding 15 faculty members in the last five years, 5 of whom have joint appointments with other departments. Current faculty in the department have Ph.D.’s in fields including Applied Mathematics, Brain & Cognitive Science, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Operations Research, Political Science, and Statistics.

The department occupies three floors of the newly renovated and modernized Kline Tower at Yale. The floor above the department houses Yale’s new Institute for Foundations of Data Science, which supports the development and application of data science across the University. New faculty in the S&DS Department will have an opportunity to play a key role in shaping this institute.

Excellence in teaching and advising in the area of Statistics and Data Science is valued, and new faculty will have opportunities to design courses that align with their research interests. The department is collegial and seeks others with strong interpersonal skills who have the capacity to increase Yale’s talent pool and effectively teach and mentor students of diverse backgrounds and interests.
