This class describes a security engineer in the information technology series responsible for performing a full range of professional and technical duties related to IT security such as, the implementation of new security solutions; incident response; and, maintaining protections from unauthorized users. The person assigned to this role will be working together with system administrators, security analysts, and other IT staff in managing security, networking, and infrastructure solutions for all 23 OSPD offices statewide. The individual assigned to this position reports directly to the IT Manager in our centralized IT division. This position completes day-to-day duties and tasks under limited supervision and must be able to work independently with limited guidance to complete major security related tasks.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Typical duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Installs, configures, and monitors security solutions, which include monitoring intrusion detection and prevention systems, logs, and other cyber security systems.Works with Specialist and Manager levels to implement security-based projects, which includes scope and design, definition requirements, procedures, testing, documentation, and implementation.Works together with security vendors and service providers to identify gaps, document vulnerabilities, and implement necessary updates and changes.Identifies, responds to and resolves security incidents in conjunction with other IT staff and managed security vendors.Works with the security team and outside vendors to assess information systems for potential risks and vulnerabilities.Assists in managing the agency-wide security awareness training solutions and how to documents.Provides guidance and recommendations on securing various systems such as firewalls, networking, cloud-based solutions, and Microsoft Windows.Updates and patches software, enterprise systems, hardware, and operating systems as required and directed by the security manager.Keeps abreast of information security technology and trends including new or revised security solutions, improved security processes, and the development of new security threats and attack vectors.Provides technical and end-user support including research, analysis, troubleshooting and resolution of a variety of non-routine to complex issues related to software, hardware, network and operating systems, and system security in response to requests submitted to the IT Helpdesk.Actively participates in the IT department’s planning and implementation of projects for the agency.Attends meetings and trainings as required.Performs other related duties, as assigned.

Minimum Qualification:

Bachelor’s degree and five years’ progressively responsible experience in information security, Microsoft Windows infrastructure, security standards and implementation, security devices (e.g., firewalls, IPS, access controls), and software applications and operating systems. Equivalent education, training, or experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and competencies required to perform at this level may substitute for education.

Preferred Qualifications:

Strong understanding of network and email security principles and best practices and experience with security awareness training systems.Experience working with CrowdStrike, Darktrace, and/or other similar security products.Experience working with Cisco and Cisco Meraki networking equipment or other equivalent products.Experience in managing and monitoring Active Directory, Microsoft 365, and Azure admin environments.Experience with SIEM solutions and/or other monitoring systems.Experience working in an environment serving indigent populations.

SKILLS & ABILITIES

Must be able to work independently and prioritize issues accordingly, with strong analytical and practical problem-solving skills.Knowledge of complex information security infrastructure and architecture.Knowledge of network and email security best practices.
