SUMMARY: We are looking for an energetic and motivated Director for our Protein Science Team that will be responsible for mammalian expression and purification of therapeutic candidate molecules. This is a high-impact role at the center of translating design concepts into physical form. As such, the Director will have wide-ranging responsibilities at the interface of protein engineering, protein science, biology and CMC to lead as part of a dynamic, enthusiastic, highly interdisciplinary and collaborative team. Job Responsibilities: Manage a team of scientists in protein production, purification and platform development to help deliver therapeutic candidates to the pipeline within agreed-upon timelines. Provide technical, operational and strategic input on all matters relating to the discovery and production of therapeutic candidates and their advancement in Xilio’s pipeline. Represent Protein Science group as project team representative and coordinate resource allocation in alignment with the Research Leadership Team. Facilitate efficient advancement of therapeutic candidates through the pipeline by serving as a conduit at the interface of protein engineering, protein science, biology and CMC and effectively collaborating cross-functionally. Proactively assess different technologies, methods, and emerging tools to increase operational efficiency and establish the PS group as a center of scientific excellence. Work with CROs, collaborators and partners to transfer samples, data and protocols into, or out of, Xilio, as appropriate. Skills, Qualifications, and Requirements: Ph.D. in Biochemistry or a relevant scientific discipline + 7-10 years of industry experience, or MS + 10-12 years of therapeutic protein expression and purification. Experience with leading a committed team of protein scientists and communicating timelines and priorities. Experience in protein expression of multiple molecule types, including antibodies, fusion proteins, and bispecific proteins from mammalian cell lines, including HEK293 and CHO transient and stable expression platforms is required. Strong technical expertise with AKTA-based protein purification with various chromatography techniques, including affinity, ion exchange, SEC, HIC, etc. Experience with common protein characterization methods, including SDS-PAGE, HPLC, CE-SDS, MALS, and endotoxin. Experience with developability/manufacturability assessments including a range of biophysical methods desired. Experience with robotics, high throughput expression and purification platforms and bioanalytical characterization techniques is highly desirable. A track record of innovation and scientific rigor, strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills, and ability to contribute constructively to discussions. Goal oriented, organized, capable of prioritizing and working on multiple projects, and able to execute timelines that meet company goals. Work well in a cross functional team environment, both independently as well as be willing to help others. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
