Job Summary:The Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences (DOVS) is seeking a Chief Administrative Officer to join their extraordinary team! The Chief Administrative Officer provides administrative leadership and operational expertise for the integration of the clinical, educational, and research programs of the Department. The DOVS has multiple affiliations including UW Health (UWH), UW School of Medicine and Public Health (UW SMPH), the UW Medical Foundation (UWMF), and the Wisconsin Foundation and Alumni Association (WFAA), each with unique administrative structures, systems and varying rules, regulations, bylaws, and missions. Additionally, the DOVS has a unique link to and responsibility for the UW Health physician group practice. The Clinical Department is organized into sub-specialty divisions of Comprehensive Ophthalmology, Cornea and Refractive Surgery, Glaucoma, Neuro-Ophthalmology, Ocular Pathology, Oculoplastics, Pediatric Ophthalmology and Adult Strabismus, Retina, Uveitis, Optometry, and Vision Rehabilitation. The research component of the DOVS encompasses themes in molecular biology, epidemiology, ophthalmic genetics, glaucoma, retina cell biology, ocular oncology, stem cells, cataract, accommodation and presbyopia, ocular imaging and clinical trials. Additionally, the educational enterprise of the DOVS directs the education of undergraduate, graduate and medical students, residents, and postdoctoral research and clinical fellows. The Department also includes the following administrative program areas: Finance, Administration, Communications and Marketing, IT, Development, Research, and Education, located in multiple operational sites including Clinical Science Center, University Station, Wisconsin Reading Center, Clinical Eye Research Unit, Medical Sciences Center, WARF, Waisman Center, as well as numerous clinical and regional services locations.
Responsibilities:
Performs, manages, or leads activities to ensure that health services, medical care, medical and health professions education, and research programs are delivered effectively, efficiently, and securely.
Supports, plans, organizes, directs, evaluates, and improves health care operations, clinical education programs, research programs, and health information systems.
Performs healthcare administration, healthcare regulatory compliance, patient relations, and operational services.
Serves as the designee of and reports directly to the Department Chair providing leadership for the management team and is responsible for the administration of the Department's clinical, research, teaching, and service programs.
Acts independently on behalf of the Chair serving as the primary representative of the department to stakeholders defined as chair, faculty, staff, school, campus, and external (federal, state and external granting agencies).
Provides leadership for the strategic and short-term planning processes as well as independently obtaining and validating data needed for strategic decision-making (15%).
Provides leadership, guidance, and management of the department's clinical, research, teaching and service programs and staff to ensure efficient and effective operations (20%).
Provides leadership and oversight of training programs including residency, fellowship, medical student, graduate student, and continuing medical education (CME) program (10%).
Provides leadership and administrative oversight of basic, clinical, and translational research programs including staffing, compliance, fiscal, information technology (IT), and facility needs (10%).
Provides leadership in developing and administering budgets across multiple organizations including University of Wisconsin (UW) Health, University of Wisconsin (UW) - Madison, School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH), and University of Wisconsin (UW) Foundation (20%).
Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees (15%).
Provides oversight and management of office, research, and clinical space on and off campus, department information systems, and regional network development (5%).
Responsible for communication and marketing of department activities, accomplishments and department philanthropic activities including meeting with and engaging potential donors (5%).
Education:Preferred: Master's Degree in business administration, finance, or health care administration.
Qualifications:
Seven or more years of progressively responsible professional experience with a record of significant accomplishments in managing a complex organization, departments, or programs, preferably in an academic medical center environment directing a large department and medical group practice.
A demonstrated understanding and recognition of the academic medical center's multiple missions of teaching, research, clinical service and community service.
Demonstrated leadership skills including ability to communicate and interact effectively with faculty, staff, and students; demonstrated abilities in policy development and interpretation; excellent organizational skills and experience managing staff; experience participating in committee activities, including leading meetings and committees, and general professionalism.
Experience with finance/budgeting, human resources, grants administration, IT, marketing/communications, faculty and staff development, facilities, and staff management.
Proven negotiation skills and ability to work well under pressure, prioritize workload effectively and delegate responsibility as appropriate.

Work Type:Full Time: 100%. This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.

Salary:Minimum
$150,000 ANNUAL (12 months) Depending on Qualifications.
