Assistant Golf Course Superintendent

Under the direction of the superintendent, this position assists with the maintenance of a golf course and driving range at Oakmont Golf Center. Operates all golf course equipment including mowers, tractors, utility vehicles and attachments. In the absence of an on-site mechanic, implements a preventative program for the equipment fleet while maintaining inventory of equipment parts and supplies. With guidance from superintendent, programs & maintains the automated irrigation system. Initiates purchases of maintenance related equipment and supplies. Develops a system of accountability for inventories, grounds equipment checklists and petroleum storage tank leak detection. Ensures compliance with FCPA hazardous materials program and appropriate state, local and federal regulations regarding the purchase, application, storage and disposal of chemicals, pesticides, and fertilizers. In the absence of the superintendent, determines if the golf course is playable and daily inspects conditions and decides when/if the golf course should open. Participates in and supervises tasks performed by the maintenance staff.

Responsibilities:Manages the maintenance and operation of a medium sized fleet of greens mowers, fairway movers, trim mowers, rough mowers, utility vehicles, spray tanks, sand trap rakes, seeders, aerators, etc.;Develops and implements a detailed turf management plan for assigned greens, tees, roughs and lawn areas;Establishes criteria for and determines golf course playability and authorizes the opening and closing of the grounds;Supervises the maintenance and operation of a small, automated irrigation system including pump house, central computer, field controllers, valves and sprinkler heads;Plans for and supervises major improvement projects such as greens and tees construction, cart path construction, sand bunker construction, site landscaping, pond dredging, etc.;Inspects Park facilities and grounds for safety hazards and operational deficiencies, recommends improvements and initiates corrective measures;Authorizes purchase requests and invoices for payment;Accountable for the purchase, storage and application and disposal of hazardous materials including pesticides, fertilizers and other turf care products;Compiles and retains operational and safety records and complies with federal, state and County safety standards;Assists with budget justifications for capital equipment, staffing and annual operating supplies;Adheres to revenue and expense limits, goals and guidelines for specialized areas of supervision;Hires, supervises, schedules and evaluates a small staff;Plans, schedules and conducts specialized on-site staff training;Completes and submits various financial, administrative, and statistical reports.

Minimum Qualifications:Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following:Graduation from a two-year associate degree program with major course work in agronomy, turfgrass management, recreation and parks, horticulture, or related field, plus two years' experience as an assistant golf course superintendent or other applicable position at a golf course.

Preferred Qualifications:Certified Pesticide License in turf grass 3B (or obtained within 90 days upon hire)Fertilizers License in Turf Grass (or obtained within 90 days upon hire)Proper transportation to and from workAble to work 40 hours a week and overtime during the summer months (along with weekends)

Certificates and Licenses Required:Driver's License (Required)Registered Technician (required upon hire)Commercial Pesticide Applicator’s License (Required within 6 months)Certified Fertilizer Applicator License (Required within 6 months)

Necessary Special Requirements:

The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to climb on and off equipment. Ability to lift up to 30 lbs. Ability to use both hand and foot controls for extended periods. Ability to wear respirators and other protective equipment and clothing. All duties may be performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
