DIRECTOR OF FINANCE
CT Humanities (CTH), a state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities located in Middletown, Connecticut, seeks a full-time (37.5 hours) director of finance.

Position Summary
Reporting to the deputy director of administration, the director of finance is responsible for planning, directing, and controlling all financial aspects of the organization, including accounting, budgeting, payroll, financial planning and compliance with generally accepted accounting principles. Handles accounts payable, accounts receivable, budgeting, purchasing and grants fiscal administration according to generally accepted accounting principles. CT Humanities currently has a staff of seventeen and an annual budget of $2.5 million.
Core Responsibilities
Cash and Risk Management
Manages banking relationships
Develops and manages risk management policies and practices.
Determines insurance needs, secures policies, and manages coverage.
Manages all federal, state, and private funds received and prepares reports according to specific grantors’ requirements.
Accounting and Financial Controls
Implements and administers staff-level payment authority policies and practices.
Manages payroll, payroll adjustments of new hires, promotions, pay grade changes, terminations, tax issues, and benefits
Manages the financial software system, ensuring it continues to comply with business regulations, federal and state requirements, all other practices, and requirements as they change over time.
Develops and oversees accounting policies and procedures, as well as internal financial control policies.
Manages the external audit; reviews and analyzes results and recommendations for approval of the audited financial statements.
Financial Reporting and Monitoring
Key staff liaison to board finance and audit committees.
Responsible for internal financial management reporting for the organization including formal reports for management, department heads, board committees and full board, as well as ad hoc reporting and analyses as required.
Posts journal entries, month-end and year-end close, review bank reconciliation, monthly reporting, and grant accounting
Prepares and submits regulatory filings
Budgeting
Working with the executive director and department directors, creates the organization’s annual operating budget.
Works with program staff to develop project, program, and grant application budgets and to document budget adjustments.
Collaborates with the director of development to develop workflow for incoming grants and donations.
Manages restricted funds, ensuring dispersion as specified in grant awards
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree in accounting or equivalent experience.
Understanding of and experience in GAAP are required.
Five or more years of experience a supervisory accounting role.
Five or more years of experience in a nonprofit environment is preferred.
Knowledge of federal and state grant accounting/reporting is desirable.
Knowledge of banks, banking systems and cash management.
Knowledge of and expertise with computerized accounting systems such as QuickBooks.
Ability to develop and use spreadsheets and standard business software systems. Excellent spreadsheet skills are critical.
CPA or similar accounting certification preferred but not required.
REQUIREMENTS
Car for in-state travel: 10% to 20% (mostly in-state with occasional overnight)
Occasional attendance at events/meetings outside regular business hours

CTH’s workday is 9:00am to 5:00pm, Monday through Friday with room for flexibility in employee schedules. The director of finance will work both remotely and onsite at CTH’s Middletown office. The director of finance will work with the deputy director of administration to create their in-office schedule upon hiring.
