Job Description - Patient Financial Counselor (3308804)General Summary/ Overview Statement:The Patient Business Representative (PBR) functions as a financial counselor and registrar and is responsible for evaluating financial history for uninsured and underinsured patients to determine eligibility for financial assistance programs. The PBR serves as the primary contact for patients needing assistance with billing and financial issues that cannot be resolved by the Practice Service Representative. A strong working knowledge of the billing/revenue cycle, managed care requirements, coding, and compliance is required.Principal Duties and Responsibilities:Screen patients for MassHealth, CarePlus, Connector Care, Health Safety Net, and assist in the application process.Track all cases using ONTRAC and assist with out-of-state applications.Act as patient representative in cases submitted via the Health Connector.Assist patients in applying for pharmaceutical assistance programs.Help Medicare patients apply for Low Income Subsidy for Medicare Part D.Assist patients in understanding financial assistance programs and low-cost insurance plans.Support patients in applying for Social Security, WIC, Fuel Assistance, etc.Act as a liaison between patients, hospital billing departments, and billing agencies.Counsel and advise patients on discount options according to Partners guidelines.Investigate and resolve billing inquiries initiated by patients.Review visit notes/codes against entries in EPIC and ONTRAC.Maintain a daily workflow queue of patient and practice billing issues.Assist in the registration process and update accounts as necessary.Qualifications:Bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant experience required.Certified Applications Counselor (CAC).Prior experience with financial assistance or government-related programs preferred.Knowledge of medical terminology helpful.Familiarity with hospital legacy systems, Microsoft Office, and Share Point preferred.Demonstrated excellent customer service abilities.Proficiency in oral and written communication.Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.BWH is an Affirmative Action Employer.
