Job TitleSenior Cloud Engineer

Job SummaryThe Senior Cloud Engineer is responsible for designing and managing cloud infrastructure, systems, applications, policies, and strategies to support an organization's cloud environment. This role involves evaluating and identifying cloud solutions, developing scalable architectures, and ensuring security and compliance for Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) and Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) platforms. The Cloud Engineer will also collaborate with cross-functional teams to optimize cloud environments, monitor performance, and proactively resolve issues. This position requires a strong knowledge of cloud products, security practices, and industry trends, with the ability to design controls, processes, and utilize audit tools to ensure efficient cloud operations.

Key Responsibilities

Design and implement automated self-service portals and support integration with platforms such as GitHub, Azure, and other CSP tools.

Lead pilot activities and develop policies, best practices, and cloud modules for scientific computing with an emphasis on automation and workflows.

Ensure security and compliance of cloud environments in line with NIST, FIPS, and NIH policies.

Perform security vulnerability assessments, maintain documentation, and manage security operations for NIH cloud systems.

Provide Assessment & Authorization (A&A) support for maintaining Cloud ATOs.

Assist NIH staff in refining cloud requirements and selecting appropriate products and services.

Develop customer self-service reference material and documentation, providing consultation across cloud use cases and services.

Collaborate on cloud enablement efforts, including training, knowledge sharing, and community building to support NIH research initiatives.

Monitor cloud infrastructure performance, troubleshoot issues, and optimize environments for scalability, performance, and cost-effectiveness.

Develop and implement strategic plans for the efficient use of cloud resources while ensuring alignment with NIH research objectives.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field.

4-7 years of experience in cloud engineering or a related role.

In-depth knowledge of cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.

Experience with cloud architecture, automation, and data migration.

Expertise in cloud security, compliance, and industry standards (NIST, FIPS, etc.).

Proficiency in designing and maintaining scalable IaaS and PaaS environments.

Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills with a focus on performance optimization.

Relevant cloud certifications (AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert, etc.).

Experience in strategic cloud planning and architecture for scientific or government organizations.

Knowledge of cloud-native tools for automation (e.g., GitHub Actions, Azure AD Federation).

Compensation and BenefitsThe projected compensation range for this position is $121,125 to $159,750 per year benchmarked in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. The target salary is $141,000. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. Salary at LCG is determined by various factors, including but not limited to role, location, the combination of education/training, knowledge, skills, competencies, certifications, and work experience.
