DESCRIPTION
The UC San Diego academic organization includes twelve divisions and schools, eight undergraduate colleges, the Library, University Extension and ~35 organized research units with over 11,000 faculty and other academic personnel on the general campus (Academic Affairs, including University Extension and Library), at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and in the UC San Diego Health System. The hiring, advancement, and retention of our world class faculty, researchers, and other academics is paramount to the University's research-focused, student-centered, service-oriented mission and is the very cornerstone upon which the quality and prestige of the University is built. Academic Personnel Services provides the general campus, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and Health Sciences with the knowledge and expertise to ensure that this mission succeeds.Under the direction of Assistant Vice Chancellor and Sr. Director, Policy, Process, and Training within Academic Personnel Services, the Academic Policy and Family Programs Director provides leadership, guidance, education, development, revision, analysis and implementation of UC San Diego’s academic personnel policies and procedures. The Director serves as the campus liaison with Office of the President for systemwide policy reviews, and as the campus representative for systemwide committees established to review and/or develop new academic personnel policies.The Director serves as an expert consultant to the Executive Vice Chancellor, Senior Associate Vice Chancellor-Academic Affairs, the Assistant Vice Chancellor-Academic Personnel, Deans, the Academic Personnel Services staff, department chairs, and other senior administrators on complex policy interpretation issues, and seeks to assure the campus understands and is aware of pertinent policies.The incumbent serves as the campus subject matter expert regarding UC/UC San Diego family accommodation policies and family-friendly programs and services. The Director provides counsel to the Assistant Vice Chancellor, Deans, Provosts, Department Chairs, faculty, and departmental staff regarding family and family friendly leave and accommodations programs, and is the first point of contact for prospective and current academic appointees with questions regarding family accommodation policies and family-friendly programs and services.The Director spearheads campus outreach and marketing of broad Academic Personnel initiatives, UC/UC San Diego policies and systems, and family accommodation programs and services. The incumbent independently designs, implements, and analyzes the effectiveness of a wide range of innovative marketing and promotional campaigns designed to increase awareness and understanding of Academic Personnel initiatives, UC/UC San Diego policies and systems, and family accommodation programs and services.QUALIFICATIONS
Requires advanced knowledge and experience in policies and procedures that govern
academic
Human Resources.
Advanced knowledge of university academic personnel and/or staff human resource policies, or comparable areas of administration, and ability to apply these policies correctly and consistently.
Excellent critical and innovative thinking to address complex issues and present nuanced analyses.
Ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences. Outstanding interpersonal skills including tact, diplomacy, flexibility, and active listening skills; excellent communication skills to effectively convey information in a leadership capacity; proven ability to concisely communicate and explain policies and procedures to a diverse clientele.
Proven leadership skills with the ability to act independently and exercise sound judgment.
PREFERRED:5+ years demonstrated experience in UC Academic Personnel or Human Resources.
