The County of Orange, California is seeking an experienced

Assistant Chief Investigator

to uphold the highest standards of justice in the

District Attorney’s (DA) Office – Bureau of Investigation . This position is pivotal in shaping and implementing the investigative policies and procedures for the DA’s Office. The ideal candidate has an extensive background working in either police or DA offices, and has significant supervisory and state and/or national law enforcement leadership experience. They will oversee a direct staff of four, up to 275 indirect reports, and an approximate budget of $60 million. This role will serve as a key liaison with law enforcement agencies at the local, state, and federal levels, while also ensuring that staff conduct successful investigations. They will act as a connector and motivator, emphasizing law enforcement as a lifestyle.

THE JOB

As an executive team member in the DA’s Office, the Assistant Chief Investigator will have a pivotal role in shaping and implementing investigative policies and procedures and maintaining Orange County’s status as California’s safest large county. They will be deeply involved in the community and leverage a proven track record of building relationships and professional and political networks. Reporting to Chief Investigator, Paul Walters, the Assistant Chief Investigator will attend community meetings, public forums, and local events to build relationships, address concerns, and foster trust with the community. They will work closely with partner organizations to lobby for policies that support law enforcement. This individual will keep current with legislative changes, and drive recruitment and retention efforts. They will maintain a positive organizational culture and ensure staff are developed and trained to handle diverse and complex cases. This role includes running significant task forces and mentoring and guiding commanders and supervisors to enhance overall departmental effectiveness. They will oversee the Bureau’s staff and department budget and budget processes.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate will have prior law enforcement leadership experience with justice partners at the state and/or national level and have Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification. They bring executive-level experience (i.e., Assistant Chief Investigator, Chief Investigator, Police Chief, Deputy Police Chief, or similar), with an extensive background working in either police or district attorney offices; ideally a combination of both. They possess exceptional leadership skills, demonstrated by a proven track record in criminal investigation and a deep understanding of legal protocols. This role requires a strategic thinker who maintains a big-picture perspective, with a high-energy, passionate approach to law enforcement. They will have strong analytical abilities, and an aptitude for problem-solving. The ideal candidate will have excellent relationship and communication skills and be a collaborator, liaising with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies to address common issues such as drug trafficking in major urban environments. The next Assistant Chief Investigator will demonstrate a commitment to ethical practices, attention to detail, and professionalism. The successful candidate will excel in working collaboratively with attorneys internally, uphold ethical standards, public trust, and demonstrate good judgement and best practices in the pursuit of justice.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS / MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Two (2) years of experience as a Supervising Attorney's Investigator in the employ of the District Attorney's Office, County of Orange. OR

Four (4) years of experience in criminal investigation including two years in a responsible supervisory capacity in a District Attorney's office or other law enforcement agency. Education or training at the college level directly related to the required knowledge and abilities may be substituted for up to one year of non-supervisory experience at a rate of two semester units for each month of experience or one hour of training for each hour of experience.

CERTIFICATIONS:

Applicant must meet all requirements for peace officer status that are mandated by the California Government Code and Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) regulations for the class of Investigator.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Candidates who receive a contingent job offer must pass a P.O.S.T. background investigation, meet medical standards, pass a psychological assessment, and submit to fingerprint collection.

HIGHLY DESIRED

Education:

Master's degree or higher in Criminal Justice, Sociology, Public Administration, Business Administration, Computer Forensics, or related field. Graduate of California P.O.S.T. Command College or PERF’s Senior Management Institute for Police (SMIP) or similar graduate level leadership courses.

RECRUITMENT PROCESS

District Attorney Human Resources screens all applications to identify the qualified candidates. After screening, qualified candidates will be referred to the next step in the process and notified of all further procedures applicable to their status in the competition.

The recruitment process will consist of the following assessment:

Structured Oral Interview Assessment | (100% Weighted)

Candidates will be interviewed and rated by a panel of job knowledge experts. Each candidate's rating will be based on the content of his or her responses to questions designed to elicit the candidate's qualifications for the job.

SECURE THE DATES

Virtual structured oral interviews will take place on October 23rd, 24th, and 28th.

Candidates placed on the eligible list will move forward to

in-person

selection interviews on November 19th and November 20th. Candidates invited to the selection interview must be available to interview

in person.
