Muon seeks a Senior Systems Engineer to join our spacecraft engineering team in Mountain View, CA. At Muon, we are developing multiple missions to help understand and act on climate impacts. In this role you will span the full lifecycle of spacecraft design - from initial formulation with the Business Development team, through execution with the spacecraft hardware and software teams, to on-orbit validation and mission performance monitoring with the Operations team. You will be responsible for interacting with customers and cross functional team leads to develop requirements and ICDs, work with other Systems Engineers to perform system modeling, develop test plans with AI&T teams, and identify and reduce risk across the program with Technical Program Managers. Muon is a lean and agile team, so keys to success in this role are your ability to “right-size” analysis and processes for differing levels of system maturity and risk, your flexibility to work with changing demands and schedules, and your effective communication of technical content to a diverse audience. This role will be located on-site at least 3 days per week at our headquarters in Mountain View, California.Responsibilities
Translate customer requirements and needs into program requirementsManage requirements traceability and own requirements verification and validationLead the conceptualization, design and development of multi-mission spacecraft systems, providing technical expertise and driving cross-functional tradesDefine mission concept of operations and manage subsystem technical budgets (e.g. power, data, mass, pointing/stability)Assess internal and external risks to the mission, develop mitigation plans, and communicate them effectivelyAssess impacts of and coordinate changes across disciplines throughout the program lifecycleConduct design reviews, test readiness reviews, and flight readiness reviewsMonitor the performance of on-orbit spacecraft and data pipelines, ensuring customer requirements are metCommunicate effectively with other systems engineers, software developers, data product developers, ground segment team, and mission operations teamsContribute to the continuous improvement of engineering processes, tools, and methodologies to enhance efficiency and effectiveness in spacecraft development and operationsQualifications
B.S. or higher degree in an engineering field plus 5 years of experience working in a multi-disciplinary environment, preferably with exposure to spacecraft systems, remote sensing instruments, and orbital mechanicsExtensive experience system modeling, systems analysis, and running simulationsProven history of system integration and delivery of complex systemsExperience managing requirements for a multi-disciplinary projectDedication to finding resolutions based on the most important factors and dataDemonstrated project management skills and ability to collaborate with other engineering disciplinesExcellent communication, presentation, and coordination skillsAbility to rapidly change roles/responsibilities while working in a high-paced, rewarding work environmentNice-to-have Skills
Software skills in Python or JuliaA proven track record of successful satellite missions.Remote sensing instrument experience across multiple modalities (e.g. optical, multispectral, RF), and their associated data pipelinesKnowledge of industry standards for electrical and/or software quality practicesFamiliarity with software engineering tools and processes (version control, code review)About Muon Space
