The controller has overall responsibility for the operational and financial reporting aspects of California Community Foundation (CCF). Supervises and provides overall guidance and support to finance staff in the areas of fiscal operations, accounting procedures, and technical accounting standards. Proposes and writes policies and procedures for the Finance Department. Works closely with other foundation staff on the financial aspects of asset development and support services to donors and donor advisors.Major Responsibilities:

Accounting : Oversees daily operational processes including but not limited to, cash receipts and cash disbursements. Oversees the monthly reconciliation and accounting for the foundation’s cash and investments accounts.Audit & Budget : Manages and coordinates the foundation’s and its affiliate’s annual financial audit by an outside independent auditor, providing schedules and information as required. Assists CFO as needed in preparing and administering the operating and grants budget.Financial Reporting : Oversees preparation of monthly financial reports. Prepares year-end financial statements and related footnote disclosures. Produce customized financial reports as requested by donors.Insurance : Oversees the foundation’s property and liability insurance policies including work with broker and carriers on securing or renewing coverage.Tax Reporting : Coordinates preparation of tax returns for the foundation, supporting organizations, charitable remainder trusts, and other affiliated organizations by outside accounting firms.Supporting Organizations : As appointed, serves as a board member or officer on the foundation’s supporting organizations, provides information and attends scheduled meetings, as appropriate.Payroll : Responsible for oversight of payroll function. Reviews and maintains payroll reports and records payroll transactions into accounting system.Systems Oversight : Maintains foundation’s accounting software including coordinating upgrades, conversions, or implementing software module additions. Works with CFO to develop and update financial policies, procedures, and internal controls.Departmental Supervision : Directly supervises the Accounting Manager, Senior Financial Analyst, & Compliance and Budget Analyst. Manages workflow of the department. Prepares and reviews staff work assignments where necessary and evaluates individual and department performance. As needed, provides back-up for other accounting staff. Proposes and writes policies and procedures for the Finance Department and CCF staff.Management : Serves as a member of the foundation’s management team, attending management team meetings, completing assignments as required and coordinating work between departments and with external vendors, as necessary. Identifies and pursues opportunities for internal integration of work across functions and departments to make connections and leverage the strengths and efforts of CCF.Board Relations : Assists the CFO in providing staff support to committees of the Board of Directors, as appropriate. Coordinates and attends Audit and Budget and Investment Committees meetings.General : As appropriate, assists other departments and works as a member of interdepartmental teams to ensure the effective and efficient operations of CCF. At all times, demonstrates cooperative behavior with supervisors and coworkers. Participates in affinity groups (e.g. FAOG - Fiscal and Administrator Officer Group, Community Foundations), as appropriate. Participates in inter-departmental task forces to plan, evaluate, and implement policies and procedures. Other duties as assigned, dependent on organizational needs and employee skills.Qualifications:

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position.Experience : 5-10 years related accounting experience, preferably in a nonprofit or foundation accounting environment or endowment management. Thorough knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles especially those applicable to nonprofits. Knowledge of federal and state regulations governing nonprofits. Demonstrated skills in management, planning and staff supervision and development. Successful managerial experience in leading a team and mentoring/coaching staff.Education : A bachelor’s degree in business, accounting or related field and CPA certification is required. MBA a plus.Finance & Investment Skills:

Experience and/or training in investments (operations, accounting, asset allocation, and/or valuation), real estate investment & property management, credit analysis & monitoring, and negotiations, highly desirable.Communication Skills : Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.Technology Skills : Strong computer skills with ability to master software and maximize efficiency through automation. Proficiency in all Microsoft Office applications. Experience with Blackbaud Financial Edge software is highly desirable.Project Management Skills : Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Ability to prioritize work and adjust to multiple demands. Experience in creating realistic project budgets and time lines.Team Work & General Skills : Highly motivated, with ability to work well independently and as team member. Ability to take initiative and follow tasks through to completion. Ability to lead a team toward CCF's goals, leveraging each team member's skill set.Working Conditions:

Requires the ability to sit and work at a desk for several hours at a time.Requires the ability to travel and attend meetings, presentations and events outside the office, which may require occasional use of a motor vehicle for transportation to other locations.This position is required to be available to speak with clients and/or others while away from the office and/or with clients and/or others located in other time zones outside Foundation business hours.Work may require occasional weekends and/or extended work day.Punctuality and satisfactory attendance are essential functions of the job.Compensation:

This is a regular, full-time, exempt position. Salary is dependent on experience and qualifications.
