POSITION SUMMARYThe Illinois College of Osteopathic Medicine (proposed) seeks an accomplished physician, educator, and leader to serve as the founding Chair of the Department of Primary Care and Medicine. Reporting to the Senior Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs, the Chair will provide leadership and strategic direction for the Department, oversee and manage departmental operations and administration, recruit and oversee the evaluation, mentoring, and development of departmental faculty, and represent the Department's interests at the College and University levels. The Department Chair will lead an interdisciplinary team of physician educators in developing and delivering an innovative osteopathic medical curriculum encompassing internal medicine, family medicine, critical care, emergency medicine, pediatrics, and related medical specialties.The successful candidate will establish the Department's goals and objectives, manage faculty and staff, oversee the Department's contributions to the curriculum, develop internal and external partnerships, manage budgets and resources, and ensure compliance with relevant standards and regulations. The Chair will be responsible for advancing osteopathic excellence through innovative education, research, and clinical partnerships across the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine curriculum. Applicants are expected to merit the rank of associate or full professor.The position is based on the Chicago, IL campus, with relocation assistance available for eligible candidates.PRINCIPAL DUTIESDepartment Vision and PrioritiesAs Chair, you will establish, articulate and implement the vision for the Department’s education, research and clinical service within primary care and internal medicine specialties at the College. Top priorities include:Fostering the College’s vision, mission, values, goals, and agenda within the department and align the department’s focus and activities with the College's strategic prioritiesWorking across interdisciplinary teams to develop curriculum integrating osteopathic principles across all learning modalities: classroom and lab instruction, simulation (working with the Associate Dean of Simulation), ambulatory care, inpatient serviceRecruiting and developing talented physician educators with exemplary teaching, scholarship and practitioner capabilitiesSecuring diverse affiliations with clinics, hospitals and healthcare centers to provide robust clinical training environments (working when necessary with the Office of Clinical Affairs).Fostering passion for lifelong learning and commitment to underserved communities among traineesBuilding partnerships to increase research capacity and external fundingAchieving early programmatic accreditation milestones and helping prepare for COCA site visitsEducation LeadershipAs Chair you will provide vision, oversight and direction for the Department’s teaching and instruction, including:Partnering with the Office of Academic Affairs to provide oversight of curriculum design, delivery, and evaluation to promote program quality, integrity, and continuous quality improvementCoordinating teaching assignments for Departmental facultyDeveloping and implementing longitudinal assessment plans from early clinical exposure through core rotationsPromoting the adoption of innovative, evidence-based instructional methods and technologiesParticipate in the development and delivery of the curriculum and the assessment of student learningSupporting development of faculty teaching skills as medical educators and osteopathic role modelsPartnering with stakeholders to facilitate student advising and ensure opportunities for student mentoring, scholarly activity and professional growthEnsuring programs meet evolving accreditation and regulatory requirementsBASIC QUALIFICATIONSTerminal degree (DO/MD) in requisite area of expertiseBoard certified with clinical expertise in internal medicine, primary care or associated sub-specialties10+ years academic medicine experience with progressive leadershipSubject matter expertise relevant to department focusExperience in medical education with progressive leadership experienceSubject matter expertise in evidence-based osteopathic practiceIDEAL QUALIFICATIONSExperience with strategic planning, faculty development, curriculum design, and people managementRecord of effective departmental or program leadership at the graduate or medical education levelDemonstrated ability to manage complex projects, budgets, and teamsScholarly portfolio and proven external funding recordDemonstrated teaching excellenceExcellent people management and consensus-building skillsStrong interpersonal and communication skillsCreative problem-solving skills with a solutions-oriented mindsetPassion for the osteopathic philosophy and promoting diversity, equity, and inclusionCompensation & BenefitsThis opportunity is budgeted at $250,000-$300,000 base compensation.
