Physicist Research Scientist
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Berkeley, California, United States, 94709
Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Accelerator Technology & Applied Physics (ATAP) Division has an opening for a Physicist Research Scientist to work.In this exciting role, you will perform and lead research projects in the Berkeley Center for Magnet Technology (BCMT) and the Superconducting Magnet Program (SMP) focusing on the development of superconducting magnets for High Energy Physics (HEP), Fusion Energy Science (FES), Nuclear Science (NS) and medical applications. Research focus also includes projects in the national Magnet Development Program (MDP), with the goal to advance superconducting accelerator magnet technology for future colliders. What You Will Do:Contributes to the development of advanced superconducting magnet technology, and participates in the design, fabrication and testing of superconducting magnets and other projects at LBNL related to magnet technology.Contributes expertise in research efforts at LBNL by working to increase the performance of advanced superconducting magnets, implementing both Low (LTS) and High Temperature Superconductors (HTS), for high-field applications.Contributes expertise in the development, design, and implementation of quench protection systems for superconducting magnets, and leads the testing and analysis of magnet performance.Implements numerical models to perform magnetic, thermal, and quench protection simulation of superconducting magnets.Contributes to the development of innovative diagnostics for quench detection and protection.Provides solutions to improve the performance of advanced superconducting magnets in close collaboration with universities, national laboratories, and industry partners.Collaborates with BCMT, SMP and ATAP scientists, engineers, postdocs, technicians, and students, to fully leverage expertise and capabilities for R&D efforts.Conducts independent research, towards specific goals of the SMP and the US MDP.Supervises students, technical staff and post-doctoral researchers.Leads and/or contributes to funding proposals for research projects.Documents and communicates results of work in peer-reviewed journal publications and oral presentations, and participates in meetings, conferences, and reviews.Adheres to Environment, Safety, and Health (EH&S) policies and practices. What is Required:Ph.D. plus postdoctoral experience and/or equivalent experience in Mathematics, Engineering, or Physics or the equivalent combination of education and experience.Minimum of
Demonstrated expertise in the application of advanced modeling techniques applied to combined magnetic, mechanical, and thermal systems.Demonstrated experience in the application of FEA and/or other software tools to superconducting magnet systems.Demonstrated experience with quench detection, quench protection and testing of magnet systems.Demonstrated publication record of research in magnet design and analysis, and presentations of scientific findings at seminars and conferences.Knowledge of low and high temperature superconductors, and finite element or similar simulationsCapability to be flexible and creative in pursuing new topics and carrying out forefront research in the area of high-field magnets, structural mechanics, electromagnetics, and thermal/cryogenic principlesProven knowledge related to materials properties and characterization for superconducting magnets.Proven experience in the review of technical drawings and schematicsProven ability to lead research and to be effective within the LBNL complex.Proven ability to work well in a multidisciplinary and multi-laboratory team environment.Proven ability to conduct research independently and in collaboration with scientists, engineers, and technicians both within and outside LBNL.Project experience: cost and schedule, quality control and quality assurance.Notes:This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.The full salary range of this position is between $8,928 to $21,429 per month and is expected to pay between a targeted range of $11,905 to $16,667 per month depending upon the candidate’s skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience plus also aligned with the internal peer group. This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.Work will be primarily performed at: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.Learn About Us:Berkeley Lab (LBNL) addresses the world’s most urgent scientific challenges by advancing sustainable energy, protecting human health, creating new materials, and revealing the origin and fate of the universe.
