Parkersburg Country Club was founded in 1902 and became the first country club to be incorporated in West Virginia. The club is a full-service, member owned 501c7 that boasts a championship 18-hole golf course set alongside the majestic Ohio River, a newly redesigned pool complex and a tennis complex. The stately club house incorporates casual dining, private dining, a ballroom, a patio, a sports bar and deck overlooking the pool complex.
The club is set in an upscale bedroom community for Parkersburg WV with a rich history of major industry related to oil, gas and the plastics industry. It is also home to the federal government’s bureau of fiscal services. The population of the county is 90,000 with a diverse mix of professionals, retirees and trades people.
Brief Job Description:
The General Manager (GM) serves as the Chief Operating Officer of the club, managing all aspects of the club including its activities and the relationship between the club and its Board of Governors (BOG), members, guests, employees, community, government and industry. The GM coordinates and administers the club’s policies as defined by its BOG and develops operating policies and procedures and oversees the work of all department managers. He/she implements and monitors the budget and meets with the BOG monthly regarding financial reporting and planning; monitors the quality of the club’s products and services, ensures maximum member and guest satisfaction and secures and protects the club’s assets, including facilities and equipment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Manage day-to-day operations of the club, utilizing the club’s leadership team to ensure an aligned team focused on member and guest satisfaction.
Personally engage members and guests to convey a welcoming atmosphere, soliciting sincere feedback on their satisfaction regarding services, products, personnel and facilities.
Meet monthly with the BOG and participate in committee meetings and operational meetings with club personnel.
Communicate effectively with members, utilizing various means and methods to promote the club and its services and amenities.
Coordinate the development, deployment and monitoring of the club’s long range and annual business plans and budgets.
Lead development of operating and capital budgets according to the budget calendar, monitoring monthly results and taking corrective action as required.
Provide advice and recommendations to the BOG and committees about various matters, including those that may arise as opportunities or unplanned developments.
Develop and execute strategies to retain and recruit members to the Club.
Sponsor, initiate or review programs to provide members with a variety of events and engagements.
Properly manage all aspects of the club’s activities to ensure and maintain the quality of products and services provided by the club.
Develop, maintain and disseminate a basic management philosophy to guide all club personnel toward optimal operating results, employee morale and member satisfaction.
Work with subordinate department heads to hire, develop, schedule and lead the direct work of all club personnel.
Prepare reports and other support materials for use by the BOG and committees.
Maintain membership with the Club Managers Association of America and other professional associations. Attend conferences, workshops and meetings to keep abreast of current information and developments in the field.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Manage five department heads who supervise a total of ~55 employees, with ~40 additional seasonal employees during peak periods. The department heads oversee the following areas: Food & Beverage Services; Pro Shop & Greens Services; Events and Membership Services; Maintenance Services; and Pool and Racquet Amenities. Responsible for two non-supervisory employees. Responsible for the overall direction, coordination and evaluation of these areas, from the strategic planning inputs through the day-to-day delivery of goods and services and members and guest satisfaction. Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the Parkersburg Country Club policies and applicable laws and regulations. Direct and indirect responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and correcting employee performance; and addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Candidate Qualifications:
Significant leadership experience in a private club or similar hospitality environment is desired, preferably with at least five years in a key leadership role with other managers as direct reports.
Strong communications skills, both verbally and written, with the ability and receptiveness to utilize various methods for effective communications and dialogue with members and personnel.
Fundamental financial skills and strong administrative skills, including a clear understanding and utilization of metrics to track performance and respond appropriately (taking corrective action or rewarding and reinforcing exceptional results). Includes the ability to create, track and utilize dashboards to ensure effective operation and progress on plans.
A track record of success in food and beverage operations is desired, including the demonstrated ability to build and motivate staff to deliver exceptional service and quality.
Experience working with volunteer boards or committees, including the flexibility of providing leadership or receiving guidance and direction.
Basic IT skills, including Microsoft Office, email and social media, databases, and (preferentially) the Jonas POS system.
Educational Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in operations management or equivalent experience preferred.
Certified Club Manager (CCM) designation preferred but not required.
