The Opportunity
The Hospital Integrated Research Organization (HIRO) group at Mass General Brigham is looking for a talented and highly motivated Senior Data Scientist to join our expanding team supporting clinical research for multiple sponsored projects. As a member of the team, you will work directly with the Director of Data Science and Analytics, our group of skilled analysts and engineers, and our clients to develop new insights from complex data sets for improvements in healthcare treatment options and other research questions. The focus of the Senior Data Scientist will be to develop and refine algorithms to identify disease phenotypes that will be used for research, clinical applications, and beyond. Additional areas of focus may include Predictive Model development and validation, using Natural Language Processing (NLP) to extract information from complex data sets, and additional machine learning algorithms.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Lead clinical research projects as determined by the research sponsor and the Director
Plan, document, and implement systems that manage complex data flow and data update strategies
Work collaboratively with the team to create and document policies regarding data usage, users, the Institutional Review Board (IRB), and the privacy committee
Research and develop statistical learning models for data analysis
Responsible for the development and implementation of NLP models, algorithms, and frameworks to support clinical research and sponsored projects
Keep up-to-date with the latest technology trends
Communicate results and ideas with co-investigators, team members, and collaborators
Implement new statistical or other mathematical methodologies as needed for specific models or analysis
Optimize joint development efforts through appropriate database use and project design
Work with sponsored and academic collaborators to understand needs and implement cutting-edge algorithms with machine learning
Communicate progress status against project plans to the project manager and key stakeholders
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Applied Math or related field; PhD Preferred
7+ years’ practical experience with ETL, data processing, database programming, and data analytics
Experience working with healthcare and/or clinical data
Extensive background in data mining and statistical analysis (e.g., SAS, SPSS, Stata, Python, R, or MATLAB)
Able to understand various data structures and common methods in data transformation
Able to develop new techniques
Excellent pattern recognition and predictive modeling skills
Experience with programming languages such as Java, Python and/or R
Familiar with natural language processing (NLP)
Familiar with traditional machine learning algorithms
Proficient in SQL
Comfortable working independently and defining measurable, achievable goals
