Job Summary

:

`Iolani School is seeking a service-oriented, innovative, creative, and forward-thinking individual to serve as the Director of Library Services. This individual will champion and clearly communicate a strategic vision for the Library that aligns with the school’s mission, strategic plan, and trends and best practices in school libraries. The role requires a strong manager, collaborator, and problem solver who is prepared to build partnerships with library colleagues, faculty, staff, school administrators, and students. The role engages in productive dialogue about the important role libraries play in overall student growth and works to promote our libraries as cultural and intellectual centers. A demonstrated ability to connect with young people, navigate a variety of technology platforms, and communicate clearly is very important for success in this role. The Director of Library Services oversees the Upper and Lower School Libraries and Archives, and assumes overall responsibility for daily library operations.

The ideal candidate will have a Masters of Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited program, at least 5 years of demonstrated leadership in an Upper School library, and a clear understanding of the broad landscape of trends in libraries and information technologies.

Essential Responsibilities

: Together with the Associate Dean of Studies, sets priorities and goals for K-12 library services and programs and monitors progress toward those goals.

Promotes the library program within and beyond the school, participating actively in the life of the school and connecting with faculty, administrators, staff, and students to integrate the Library into the educational program.

Keeps abreast of trends in library services and technology by reading professional journals, attending conferences and other professional development events, and maintaining contacts with other librarians through membership in professional organizations.

Identifies and implements best practices in library, archival and information technology, seeking to leverage emerging resources and technologies to improve library services and programs.

Directs library operations, including but not limited to: management of the library budget and facilities; oversight of library services, programming, policies and procedures; hiring, supervision, and evaluation of library staff.

Maintains libraries and archives as spaces that are innovative, welcoming, and community-oriented yet conducive to reading, study, and research.

Manages the library collection, reading widely and actively collaborating with library staff and faculty in the acquisition and weeding of print and digital resources.

Oversees access, instruction, and reference, encouraging departments and faculty to collaborate with the librarians to ensure that students acquire appropriate research skills and information literacy.

Collaborates with library staff, ITS, and outside vendors to ensure that the library website and catalog, LibGuides, and other technology platforms are effective portals to library resources.

Works with faculty and librarians to design and provide instruction and resources to support class projects, information literacy, and research methods; also works with individual students to teach them how to find appropriate research materials, as requested.

Oversees additional projects and duties as assigned by the Associate Dean of Studies.

Minimum Requirements

:

Master’s of Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited program.

Minimum of five years of leadership experience in a library setting.

Experience and knowledge working with library-integrated systems, educational technologies, and bibliographic instruction.

Proven ability to lead and manage staff effectively, fostering a positive work environment.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Strong understanding of library management systems, digital resources, and emerging technologies in library services.

Physical Requirements and Work Conditions

:

Extended periods of sitting, generally performs work from a desk, and/or stands and walks.

Ability to see and hear with or without correction.

Ability to lift, carry, reach overhead above shoulders, push and/or pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.

Work is generally performed Monday through Friday during normal business hours; however, evening and weekend hours are often required to meet responsibilities. Due to work in close proximity to children, the selected candidate must undergo fingerprint background check and submit proof of TB clearance required.
