Community Development Project Coordinator (Housing Development Specialist)

The City of Berkeley is seeking a Housing Development Specialist (Community Development Project Coordinator)! In this role, you will have the opportunity to be part of the team responsible for implementing the City’s Housing Trust Fund and Small Sites Programs. This position will work on renovations and new construction projects, including developments at the North Berkeley and Ashby BART sites. You will work closely with nonprofit developers to underwrite project proposals, recommend funding, negotiate loan and regulatory agreements, and monitor project progress. This position will also provide technical assistance and capacity building support to smaller, emerging developers.
You will have the opportunity to be a contributing member of Housing and Community Services Division (HCS) and the Health, Housing and Community Services Department (HHCS) that is dedicated to enhancing community life and supporting housing, health, and wellness for all. The Housing and Community Services Division is committed to a collaborative and positive work environment where team members have opportunities for professional growth while working on innovative projects that will increase local access to affordable housing. This is a temporary position, with a duration of one year.
The ideal candidate will be a motivated self-starter who is passionate about serving the Berkeley community and addressing inequities in access to safe and affordable housing. They will have skills and experience in affordable housing project management, including knowledge of affordable housing financing and an understanding of development budgets and operating proformas. They will thrive in a creative and collaborative work environment that encourages teamwork and innovation.
A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position is:Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college with major coursework in business, planning, or public administration or a closely related field.Four (4) years of professional project management experience in community development, such as housing, economic development, public works, or planning. Lead and/or supervisory experience is desirable.A master's degree in a related program is desirable and can be substituted for one (1) year of the required experience.
Must be able to attend evening meetings. A valid California driver's license is desirable.
