ORGANIZATION BACKGROUND
San Antonio Pets Alive! is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Due to alarming euthanasia rates, San Antonio Pets Alive! (SAPA!) was founded in 2011. SAPA is a fast-paced, high-volume rescue saving almost 5,000 at-risk cats and dogs from euthanasia each year.
SAPA seeks a dedicated and visionary CEO to lead the organization into continued sustainability and greater community impact. This position will maintain a balance of program innovation, mission passion, leadership with transparency and an appreciation for diversity and respect. With a budget of over $3 million and a team of 30+ staff, this position will be accountable to the members of the Board of Directors. Key responsibilities include but are not restricted to:
Resource development and maintenance
Community and public relations
Agency and program management
Personnel management
Agency liaison to the Board of Directors
Legal and fiscal oversight
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT AND MAINTENANCE
Establish annual marketing and fundraising plans, along with clear objectives for reporting teams to implement and track.
Maintain a donor base for both monetary and non-monetary resources.
Maintain a donor tracking system.
Work with the Board in any fundraising events or activities to secure adequate funding for the operation of the organization for short- and long-term funding objectives.
Support and manage the capital campaign to fund a future home for SAPA.
Increase overall revenue by implementing core tactics for fundraising events, resulting in aggressive and sustainable year-over-year growth.
Research prospective donors’ needs, concerns, and objectives to create effective sponsorship proposals. Serve as lead on all significant sponsorship asks.
COMMUNITY AND PUBLIC RELATIONS
Coordinate public relations with the purpose of recruiting volunteers and business partners and increasing public awareness of SAPA and its goals and activities.
Develop and maintain relationships with all appropriate community groups, funders, and all other animal welfare organizations to help achieve the mission of the organization.
Maintain strong, positive media relations with oversight of press releases and responses to media coverage.
Oversee the release of press packets and news releases, and follow-up of any media coverage.
Approve all written public relations material.
Seek public speaking engagements to bring the organization’s mission to life and inspire new supporters.
Effectively use social media for the promotion of SAPA programs and development activities.
SAPA’S STRATEGIC DIRECTION AND MISSION
Develop new program concepts in collaboration with staff in accordance with SAPA’s strategic direction.
Grow the organization’s impact, overseeing the implementation of the strategic plan in cooperation with the Board and staff.
Establish and effectively execute an annual operating plan which strengthens organizational success and sustainability.
LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT
Hire and supervise administrative and management staff.
Create a positive culture within the workplace that promotes teamwork and creates an environment that benefits employees, volunteers, fosters, adopters, and supporters.
Monitor and appraise staff results and performance to develop, coach and recognize staff.
Provide ongoing feedback and guidance to staff on overall performance. Provide information, educational opportunities, and growth opportunities to develop staff.
Prepare yearly performance evaluations (oral and written) for all administrative and management staff.
BOARD OF DIRECTORS LIAISON
Attend all Board meetings.
Ensure implementation of all Board directives, policies, and procedures.
Serve as liaison between Board and staff.
Keep Board apprised of operations, changes, and problems in a regular and timely manner.
Foster effective teamwork between the Board and all Staff.
Provide secure physical and electronic archives for all official documents concerning San Antonio Pets Alive to include official board proceedings and to work with the Board Secretary to ensure the archive remains current.
Collaborate with Board to recruit new Board Members.
FISCAL OVERSIGHT
Review day-to-day fiscal operations.
Collaborate with Accountant/Bookkeeper and Treasurer to submit monthly and quarterly financial reports to grantors (as required).
Review and approve all monthly and quarterly reports and expenditures with required documentation to substantiate those reports and expenditures within the authority delegated by the Board.
Submit bills and expenditures to the Accountant/Bookkeeper for reimbursement and accounting.
Assist Accountant/Bookkeeper, staff and the Board to prepare a comprehensive annual budget.
Ensure organization complies with all regulations covering taxation and withholdings payments, as well as those related to animal welfare organizations.
REQUIREMENTS
The candidate should have proven management, leadership, and relationship management experience. Qualifications include:
Bachelor’s degree
Strong skills in resource development and maintenance, fundraising, and public relations.
Experience working with volunteers, donors, and shelter operations.
Past experience and success working with a Board of Directors
Experience managing staff; preferably in a nonprofit organization
Experience building effective teams and motivating others
Understanding and experience with laws, rules, and regulations associated with animal welfare nonprofit to ensure compliance and risk management.
PREFERRED
Master’s Degree
Management of staff in a nonprofit organization
Three plus years related experience in administration of volunteer, non-profit or public service organization.
Experience working capital campaigns
PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES
The successful CEO will address the following in the first six months in the position:
Complete a review of the current strategic plan and revise as needed
Oversee day-to-day operations, including onsite visits and meetings with Directors & Staff.

Provide monthly updates to the Board on grant applications and approval status.
LONG-TERM

Ensure the programs and services offered by the organization contribute to SAPA’s mission.
Review progress, goals, and objectives of the organization and recommend alternate approaches as needed to ensure achievement of annual goals.
Review existing policies on an annual basis and recommend changes to the Board as appropriate.
Collaborate with animal rescue partners (City of San Antonio Animal Care Services, Petco Foundation) and other local and national rescue organizations to establish cooperative relationships.
Attend conferences and meetings as budget permits.
