Chief Technology Officer
As a member of the technology management team, the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) will be expected to partner with business unit and technology leaders to formulate the company's business and technology strategies and product roadmaps across Comerica. The CTO will understand the business well enough to effectively advise internal clients on the use of technology as an enabler for advancing quality, efficiency, and effectiveness that will impact top-line revenue and/or improve margins. The role will ensure the successful execution of strategic programs and investments required to drive transformation, while also overseeing the operations (business as usual) aspects of the organization.
Position Responsibilities
Technology Strategy & Vision Drive an enterprise-wide technology infrastructure strategy that incorporates the latest thinking on the cloud, DevOps, SRE/Infrastructure as a service and converged infrastructure to maximize business value. Collaborate with executives across other functions and business lines to articulate the technology vision, drive adoption, and identify additional opportunities for delivering value. Develop a culture of risk taking and innovation that continuously embraces and adapts to change. Empower the organization's ability to experiment continuously in the technology realm to foster innovation. Drive the adoption of cloud and IaaS models. Advise the Chief Information Officer and other executive leaders regarding technology adoption and technology strategy. Define enterprise-wide technology standards and policies, ensuring they are updated for relevance to technology trends. Define and implement tools, best practices and associated procedures. Promulgate technology standards and governance throughout the enterprise. Act as a liaison between the business and technology organizations to ensure that technology related business requirements and value cases are well understood and considered as part of the planning and prioritization process. Monitor risks related to the overall health of Comerica's technology/infrastructure and drive mitigation strategies to overcome risks. Create a multi-pronged vendor strategy to nurture strategic partnerships with critical vendors to strengthen Comerica's competitive positioning in the market. Proactively advise the senior management team on the emerging technologies and trends that are most relevant to the company's goals and evolving needs. Help determine capital investment parameters, priorities, and risks for technology initiatives to maximize the competitive advantage and return on investment. Partner with peer technology leaders to develop effective enterprise capabilities as appropriate aligned with core architectural principles. Maintain a high level of proficiency of industry knowledge and provide best practice for new technologies and platforms that may be transferable to Comerica in order to improve technology and corporate performance.
Strategy Execution & Technology Management Ensure effective execution of defined technology management practices in order to meet established systems' reliability, responsiveness, and timeliness expectations, as well as standards for operational resiliency and redundancy. Implement the most appropriate and effective organizational design to support and engage with the business. Direct the design, planning, implementation, and maintenance of the products and platforms that support the CTO organization. Maintain oversight of all technology projects, ensuring that commitments are properly planned, staffed, monitored and delivered. Partner with the Enterprise team to advance DevOps methodology, Human-centered Design, and effective technology and security standards. Monitor the industry for developments in technology operations; evaluate and implement relevant new tools and service management frameworks. Review, recommend, and oversee all vendors and managed service agreements for computing, telecommunications, technology services, and equipment.
Leadership Development Ensure the continuous development and advancement of technology skills and capabilities among teams across technology through ongoing coaching, mentoring, and fostering an environment of continuous learning. Create and nurture teams of teams with shared goals and objectives, while retaining and attracting top talent. Exhibit a participative management style with peers of technology and with business partners, providing a positive influence on the workforce and technology leadership teams.
Financial Management Develop and implement a plan to track usage of technology investments. Understand and drive meaningful implications of key financial indicators, and the use of financial analysis to create and evaluate strategic options and opportunities. Negotiate and manage multi-million-dollar contracts and vendor relationships on behalf of the bank. Explore and deploy tools and associated practices to build consumption patterns, identify cost optimization opportunities, and provide input to financial planning activities. Develop and deliver effective proposals in a manner that provides crisp and clear business value to executive leadership.
Risk & Operational Management Manage strategic vendor relationships. Promote a continuous improvement mindset in improving operations. Develop operational run book and procedures for respective products and platforms. Manage risk and ensure risk mitigation plans are actively managed and adjusted as appropriate. Effectively engage with regulators as required.
Position Qualifications Required: Bachelor's degree from an accredited university in Math, Science, or Engineering or 15 years of relevant IT experience or equivalent operational responsibilities. Required: 12 Years of progressively responsible experience. 10 or more years managing others including leading and motivating large diverse teams. 10 or more years managing a complex budget. 10 or more years leading through operational concerns. 8 years broad technical experience.
