The specific engineers/specialists we are seeking will be part of and have access to our ABS Consulting Chemical Process Safety Center of Excellence, which is a worldwide network of experts, resources, and training materials/courses related to a wide variety of regulatory, technical, and industry practice topics that are directly relevant to client projects. This network allows our project personnel quick access to in-depth process safety and related risk expertise/resources that can help augment the individual’s knowledge base and/or be researched to provide good industry practices and benchmarking for technical questions that may arise during client projects.
What You Will Do:
Individuals in this position will primarily be responsible for managing process hazard analysis (PHA) and layer of protection analysis (LOPA) engagements with clients at locations around the U.S., but international locations may be possible if desired. Individuals selected for this position will be responsible for leading and/or scribing PHAs/LOPAs and performing related consulting activities for a wide variety of clients across all industries (e.g., refining, petrochemical, oil & gas production, chemical, pulp & paper, pharmaceutical, consumer products, etc.).
What You Will Need:
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in engineering, preferably chemical or mechanical engineering discipline
10+ years of Engineering experience. At least 3 to 6 years of
process safety experience
and knowledge of OSHA’s process safety management (PSM) standard (29 CFR 1910.119) and/or EPA’s rule on risk management programs (40 CFR 68)
Excellent technical, interpersonal, communication, and writing skills
Job Duties
Lead and/or scribe Process Hazard Analysis (PHAs) using a variety of methods (HAZOP, What-if, checklists, etc.) and Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA) to provide risk identification/assessment
Be client-facing, having a proven record of building and maintaining positive and professional client relationships
Prepare, facilitate, and write recommendations and reports for the PHA (using HAZOP, what-if, checklists, etc.) and LOPA
Selecting appropriate PHA methodology based on the complexity of the process and hazards involved
Ensure the PHA scenarios, consequences, safeguards (and IPLs), and recommendations are complete and correctly identified and captured
Read and interpret Piping & Instrumentation Drawings, Cause & Effect Charts, Instrument Diagrams, etc.
Collaborate directly with clients on technical aspects of the projects and can communicate technical requirements and deliverables clearly and concisely
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The ideal candidate will have 10+ years of experience with at least 3 to 6 years of experience
facilitating
PHAs and LOPAs (using HAZOP, what-if, checklists, etc.)
Knowledgeable/proficient with Microsoft Word and one or more commercial PHA software programs (e.g., Leader, PHA-Pro)
Ability to read and understand process drawings (e.g., PFD, and P&ID)
Extensive experience participating on PHA teams as leader and scribe
Knowledge of safety systems (Fire & Gas, Deluge, ESD) and safeguards
Excellent skills in facilitating group meetings and engaging teams
The ability to communicate effectively through verbal and written means, and able to adapt communication to best reach the intended audience within or outside the organization
Willing to travel to assignments 20-40%.
Proficient or adept at learning to conduct client team meetings “remotely” via Web (TEAMS, WebEx, etc.)
Salary: $130-160k
Reporting Relationships:
Reports directly to Manager level position or above.
