Sofar Ocean
Senior Research/Applied Scientist
Sofar Ocean, San Francisco, California, United States, 94199
About the Position:Sofar is committed to the health of the Earth and the Earth’s oceans. Sofar’s marine weather forecasts help maintain safety at sea and support the reduction of global shipping emissions through Sofar’s Wayfinder application. Sofar’s software stack is built entirely on the cloud, which enables seamless transition between research and operations. That means your contributions can be transitioned to benefit real-time operational forecasts in a timeline measured by months rather than years.
Sofar is looking for new team members to help us advance the frontiers of numerical weather prediction (NWP) and produce industry-leading forecasts over the global oceans. We are building a world-class NWP team, spanning model development, data assimilation, and operational forecasting. The team is a close collaboration between scientists and software engineers focused on creating Sofar’s next-generation operational marine weather forecast system.
Responsibilities:
Lead the development of a key component of an operational global weather forecast system.
Own software development and scientific guidance for components related to focus area(s) of expertise.
Contribute to scientific discussions, problem solving, and setting team vision and goals.
Coordinate with the team lead on setting strategic vision and goals for the future of weather forecasting at Sofar.
Publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals.
About You:
Ph.D. plus 5 years experience, or Masters plus 10 years experience in a science, engineering, or related analytical field.
Has in-depth knowledge of at least one key component of operational weather forecasting ranging from R&D to real-time applications, for example:
Modeling of the atmosphere, waves, or ocean.
Data assimilation.
Observation processing, impact assessment, and QA/QC.
AI/ML-based pre- and post-processing.
Operational meteorology.
Proficiency in Python and a compiled software language like Fortran, C, or C++.
Has experience with high performance computing (HPC), either dedicated systems or on the cloud.
Estimated Salary Range:
$142,000 - $183,000
The range listed is what we reasonably expect to pay for this role at the time of this posting. We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and may be modified in the future. Actual compensation packages are based on several factors that are unique to each candidate, including but not limited to skill set, experience, and equity package.
Sofar's Commitment to Climate Justice:We at Sofar Ocean acknowledge that careers in the marine sciences have traditionally been, and remain, non-diverse work environments, thereby limiting the entry and prosperity of underrepresented groups in the space. Many of these same groups are disproportionately affected by climate change and are often excluded from decision-making that directly addresses their interests and needs.
We are committed to addressing these climate injustices and highly encourage people who identify as women, LGBTQ+, Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) to apply.
