Chief Operating Officer (COO)
is responsible for overseeing and managing the day-to-day functions of trucking operations to drive efficiency, productivity, profitability, and strategic growth. This role requires a strategic leader who can manage operations across multiple departments, including customer service, planning, fleet management, and operations, while aligning with the company’s growth objectives. The COO will work in collaboration with the President and other executive team members to develop, align, and implement sales growth initiatives and operational efficiencies. By optimizing delivery performance and asset effectiveness through systems, processes, staff development and efficiencies, the COO will drive revenue growth while minimizing costs. Principal Responsibilities:
Lead and oversee all daily operations, including logistics, dispatch, fleet management, maintenance, and customer service.
Establish and enforce operational procedures, performance metrics, and goals to ensure efficiency and profitability.
Develop strategies to optimize fleet utilization, reduce operational costs, and improve on-time delivery performance.
Develop and drive KPIs to measure operational performance as well as financial performance, and use the data to make informed, strategic decisions.
Collaborate with the President and other leaders to develop and implement the company’s strategic direction and growth initiatives, and to assure alignment of efforts.
Continually seek to identify and evaluate new business opportunities as well as industry trends, and lead the execution of growth plans, including market expansion, partnerships, and operational scaling.
Manage operational budgets, financial reporting, and identify and implement opportunities to increase margins through cost-saving measures and process improvements.
Collaborate with finance team members and leaders to ensure alignment between operations and financial objectives.
Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local transportation regulations, including DOT, FMCSA, and OSHA standards.
Collaborate with leaders to support the implementation of safety programs, audits, and continuous improvement in risk management efforts.
Ensure that the company maintains an impeccable safety record and promotes a culture of safety across all departments.
Lead, develop, mentor, and supervise department heads, including customer service, network planning and operations personnel, and foster a high-performance culture, encouraging innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Serve as a change agent to instill collaboration, communication, vision and problem-solving capabilities throughout the organization.
Collaborate with human resources to develop talent acquisition, retention, and training programs aligned with operational goals.
Develop and maintain strong relationships with key customers and business partners, ensuring a customer-centric approach to all operations, focusing on high-quality service and timely delivery.
Address customer complaints, inquiries, and feedback to continuously improve customer satisfaction.
Oversee the integration of new technologies to improve fleet management, dispatching, and data analytics.
Identify opportunities to implement automation, telematics, and other innovations to drive operational efficiency.
Job Requirements: Qualifications & Competencies:
Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Transportation Management, Logistics, Supply Chain Management, or related field. Master’s degree or equivalent advanced degree preferred.
Minimum of 7 years of experience in operations management, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role within the trucking or transportation industry.
Demonstrated ability to successfully manage large-scale operations, including fleet management, route optimization and customer service.
Strong knowledge of DOT regulations, FMCSA standards, and other transportation compliance requirements.
Proven ability to develop and execute operational strategies that drive efficiency and profitability, while also maintaining day-to-day operational excellence.
Experience managing teams and fostering a positive company culture, with a demonstrated ability to lead change efforts and initiatives.
Strong financial acumen and experience with budgeting, forecasting, and cost management.
Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact and communicate effectively over the phone and face to face; building solid working relationships with customers and all employees.
Must be able to effectively and accurately complete detailed work with a sense of urgency.
Demonstrate the ability to anticipate and evaluate problems and situations and implement practical solutions.
Proficiency in transportation management systems (TMS), fleet management software, and other relevant technologies.
Advanced skill level and proficiency in Excel is a must. Working knowledge and experience with Outlook and other Microsoft products.
Data accuracy and a willingness to learn new software programs is required.
Ability to maintain composure and react professionally during periods of stress.
Must be self-motivated, able and willing to work independently, expand skills and professional development.
