Job Summary

Perform activities within underwriting and portfolio management as the first line of defense for CIB's credit products organization for the designated industry, including underwriting, structuring and approval of new and renewed credit opportunities, providing ongoing credit servicing, portfolio monitoring and problem loan identification within the Synovus risk framework. May manage a portfolio. Support coverage team both from a credit and policy perspective, as well as interact with clients on a regular basis. Provide oversight for strategy and team performance objectives and communicating adjustments as risk appetite changes. Lead and develop junior team members. Monitor industry trends and respond to changes in the market. Ensure team awareness of new risks and market opportunities.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Partner with teammates in coverage, syndicated/leveraged finance and capital markets origination to develop credit opportunities/requests in assigned portfolio, including new money, renewals, amendments, modifications and restructures. Ensure credit requests are underwritten to prudent risk standards and are in compliance with Synovus policy and procedures. Assess credit issues, performance and industry trends, appropriateness of structural terms and conditions and provide recommendations to improve structure and mitigate risks. Serve as a coaching resource around client selection, loan structuring, underwriting, and servicing. Serve as subject matter expert regarding industry credits, high risk transactions and leveraged lending.

Maintain an environment where team members are empowered and highly engaged in delivering credit solutions to clients and prospects, achieving strong collaboration alongside CIB coverage bankers. Ensure teams are adequately trained and educated on industry and deal specific risk identification and risk migration. Direct workflow improvement initiatives, optimize resources, and build out an environment that supports the achievement of CIB's goals and budget. Work closely with Credit Products Managing Director(s) and/or Director(s) in the design and implementation of policies, procedures, strategies and process changes.

Create a strong control and early warning environment with timely portfolio and financial reviews, ratings assessments, collateral monitoring, and tickler reporting system to ensure regulatory compliance and to maintain portfolio quality. Include utilization of industry sector supply and demand perspective along with cycle position considerations for that sector to proactively manage exposures. Monitor industry trends and changes to maintain a forward-looking view of the industry to identify new risks and opportunities. Serve as a point of contact and partners with CIB leadership to achieve satisfactory or better ratings from Credit Review and external regulators. Meet targets for annual reviews, risk ratings, and covenant compliance monitoring.

As a first line teammate, partner with coverage, product and operations business units to proactively manage issues, identify and capitalize on incremental business opportunities, and maintain/enhance the quality of the overall client relationship.

Manages the annual performance management and merit processes for direct and indirect reports. Coaches and develops team members and builds a work environment where team members are engaged and feel a positive sense of achievement about their role in the company. Works closely with Human Resources regarding employee relations, compensation, training, posting and filling vacant positions and other Human Resources related matters.

Each team member is expected to be aware of risk within their functional area. This includes observing all policies, procedures, laws, regulations and risk limits specific to their role. Additionally, they should raise and report known or suspected violations to the appropriate Company authority in a timely fashion.

Minimum Education:

Bachelor's degree in Finance, Business Administration, Accounting or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Minimum experience:

Seven (7) years or more years of portfolio management experience including credit analysis, structuring, underwriting and approving loans across a range of CIB sectors or equivalent OR 3 years as an Associate - CIB Credit Products. Experience in a team management/leadership/coaching role is required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

Strong understanding of general credit and risk principles, mitigating factors, and banking policies and procedures.

Skill providing a balanced approach to enable focus on both business unit goals and risk management objectives.

Skill developing and executing strategic solutions and systems in support of Credit Risk and business unit goals and objectives.

Able to multi-task and function under pressure to meet deadlines.

Strong written and verbal communication and negotiation skills.

Flexible change agent able to lead both process and organizational changes

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

Series 63 and Series 79 Securities, or equivalent, licenses.

MBA, CFA, CPA and/or related educational/professional attainments.
