Position Summary, Requirements, and QualificationsOverviewNorthern Illinois University, located in DeKalb, IL, a vibrant university town located 65 miles west of Chicago in one of the most diverse regions of the United States, invites applications for the position of Administrative Aide for the Division of Research and Innovation Partnerships.
The Division of Research and Innovation Partnerships encourages research, scholarship, artistry and entrepreneurship across campus by: Promoting the professional development of faculty and graduate students; seeking connections to accelerate the creation, integration and application of new knowledge; facilitating the submission of grants and contracts; celebrating the accomplishments of talented faculty, staff and students who contribute to NIU’s success as a student-centered, public research university.Position SummaryThe Associate Vice President ( AVP ) is a key member of the division of Research and Innovation Partnerships ( RIPS ) leadership team and is an advocate for the full research, creative activity, and innovation agenda of the University. This leadership role will help expand the University’s work as a leading research institution where the faculty and staff create new knowledge and provide leadership to solve problems for Illinois, the nation, and the world. The
AVP
is the head of the
RIPS
capacity building arm of the division, leading the offices of Innovation and Research Development.
The
AVP
works closely with other members of the
RIPS
leadership team, staff, academic colleges, research institutes and centers, and research support facilities to help ensure smooth and efficient operation of
RIPS
and to coordinate investments in people and infrastructure to advance the research, creative activity, and innovation mission of the University. As a leader in
RIPS , the
AVP
will support faculty success, collaborating to develop the structures needed to support faculty development, resource acquisition, and dissemination. Along with the
AVP
of Research and Sponsored Programs ( AVP - RSP ), the
AVP
will report directly to the VP
RIPS . The
AVP
will also be expected to represent the University in research- related internal and external (state, national, and international) roles and functions as assigned by the VP.
Specific duties include:Leadership of the Office of Innovation (OI)Leadership of the Office of Research Development (OR)Key member of the Research Leadership team with significant partnership development responsibilities.Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Leadership of the Innovation Strategy and Program Implementation – 34%
Lead NIU’s innovation strategy, including oversightof the Office of Innovation, providing strategic guidance for the unit’s functions, and acting as the supervisor of the director.Optimize the intellectual property functions of the university, including technology transfer strategy and processes, patent strategy and processes, licensing strategy and processes, and the strategy and development of the university innovation ecosystem to include elements of an incubator and entrepreneurship programming.Further the development of strategic priorities for the 71 North Partnership Studio to fulfill the innovation aims of
NIU , leading the strategy for programming and partnerships in the space to enhance the innovation offerings on campus.
Leadership of the Research Development Strategy and Program Implementation – 33%
Lead NIU’s research development strategy, including oversight of the Office of Research Development, providing strategic guidance for the unit’s functions and acting as the supervisor of the director.Optimize the research development function of the university, ensuring alignment of programming with strategy to increase research capabilities, grant readiness, and collaboration of
NIU
faculty.Provide strategic direction for research development support facilitating cross-disciplinary research, scholarship, and artistry within
NIU
and with external partners.Support faculty excellence by leading
RIPS
internal funding programming, providing strategic oversight of
ORD
programming including intramural funding, limited submission selection, faculty training, funding development, and other programs in support of University and
RIPS
mission, vision, goals, and priorities.Act as a strategic leader for the facilitation of campus-wide and external recognition for research, for example the Presidential Research, Scholarship, and Artistry Professor selection process, nominations for external fellowships, etc.Lead the internal competition for limited submissions process and strategy.Lead the finding funding and faculty matching process and efforts.
Partnership Development – 33%
Forge external relationships with the national laboratories to foster an environment supporting current and future joint appointments.In collaboration with the
AVP - RSP , partner with the Associate Deans responsible for research across the university to collaboratively implement processes and resources to best support faculty research, scholarship, and artistry.Administratively staff and manage the Northern Illinois Research Foundation.Liaise with the Division of Outreach and Engagement and the Division of Advancement to collaborate on the development and implementation of a strategy for industry relations.Act as one of the resource developers for
RIPS , liaising with appropriate units to cultivate gifts, grants, sponsorships, and contracts to support the research and innovation missions of
NIU .Minimum Required Qualifications (Civil Service)
