Job Description - Temporary Job, Student Research, Endocrinology (3305049)GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
Summarize the nature and level of work performed.The CERG Research Support Staff functions under the direction and supervision of the lab manager and research investigators in accordance with the policies and procedures of the BWH. Responsibilities of the research student are to support clinical coordinators and/or lab technicians with experimental protocol events for human subjects as scheduled by Investigators. Other duties include, but are not limited to, collection of data, application of computer monitoring, assisting subjects with outpatient protocol events, weights, vital signs, fluid intake, and documentation.The CERG Research Support Staff is responsible to the Lab Manager and accountable to the Principal Investigator.PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Demonstrates understanding of the research.Supports coordinators and technicians with experimental protocol tasks and events as scheduled by the various project investigators. Provides assistance on laboratory studies per hospital guidelines and protocols.Collects, processes and transcribes data including biologic specimens.Prepares and distributes meals as scheduled in protocols and documents.Monitors and documents subject vital signs, weights, and fluid intakes.Travels to other hospital departments, as required, to obtain necessary supplies for experiments.Follows universal/standard precautions and maintains clean and safe work and subject areas, reports unsafe work areas to appropriate personnel.Maintains the safety and well-being of the experimental subjects at all times.Demonstrates professionalism and respect for subject rights and individual needs.Perform sodium and potassium measurements in plasma, serum or urine samples (flame photometry).Perform hormone, protein and mRNA assays (e.g., ELISA, Western blotting, real-time RT-PCR).Perform calculations and analyses using basic statistics.Monitor and set up any needed equipment.Maintain inventory and order supplies when necessary.Performs all other duties, as required.QUALIFICATIONS:High School graduate with college credits required.College undergraduate coursework. Prefer individuals with science or patient-care background and interest in scientific research.SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:Good organizational and interpersonal skills necessary.Able to prioritize and manage time efficiently.Ability to follow directions carefully, and once trained, to work with a minimum of direct supervision.Must possess the ability to continually learn new computer skills and update existing skills.Ability to maintain positive working relationships with co-workers and to work cooperatively with peers.Ability to perform his/her role in a team effort. Initiative and sound judgment are displayed in crisis or unexpected situations.
