if you have a disability and need a special accommodation.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Five years of experience as a DPS Police Officer as a POST-certified peace officer with the power of arrest. Two years of this experience must have been in a position equivalent or higher in scope of responsibility and/or complexity of work performed to DPS Police Sergeant in State Service.SUBSTITUTIONS:Six years of any law enforcement experience as a POST-certified peace officer with the powers of arrest.NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:Must have attained twenty-first birthday at time of application.Must possess a valid driver’s license at time of appointment.Active Police Officers Standard of Training (POST) certification.An applicant who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence or a felony, or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified by the hiring agency until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.Must complete Louisiana State Police annual in-service training.Must complete Louisiana DPS Police Emergency Vehicle Operations Course.Must complete Louisiana DPS Police advanced firearms qualification course.Must complete Louisiana intoxilyzer certification.Must complete Louisiana State Police operational leadership training.FUNCTION OF WORK:To provide second-line supervision of law enforcement activities in support of the DPS Police mission to protect life, enforce laws, serve the public, and conduct investigations within an assigned area or for a statewide specialized enforcement unit.LEVEL OF WORK:Supervisor.SUPERVISION RECEIVED:General from a DPS Police Captain or other higher-level law enforcement personnel.SUPERVISION EXERCISED:Direct over DPS Police Sergeants and other lower-level DPS Police Officers.LOCATION OF WORK:The Department of Public Safety and Corrections – Public Safety Services (DPS).JOB DISTINCTIONS:Differs from DPS Police Sergeant by the presence of second-line supervisory duties. Differs from DPS Police Captain by the absence of responsibility for the command of a section of DPS Police.EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:Supervises personnel engaged in law enforcement patrol related duties of public highways, state facilities, and other areas.Serves as an on-scene coordinator solving technical and logistical problems related to the handling/seizure of evidence, response to large scale demonstrations, natural disasters, and other department functions.Conducts internal investigations of offenses or alleged offenses committed by lower-level DPS Police Officers. Prepares necessary reports and documents evidence and data.Coordinates with other sections of DPS Police and Louisiana State Police in investigations, patrol, and disasters.Reviews body and in-car camera footage of subordinate’s activity to ensure adherence with department policy, state, and federal law.Investigates fleet incidents and crashes involving DPS Police vehicles and bicycles.Serves as the DPS Police Captain in their absence.May oversee the administrative functions of a section.Develops complex operational plans for large scale events.Conducts security assessments of state facilities.Serves as the department representative for regional public safety coalitions and groups.Manages subordinates in locations throughout the state.
