Commensurate with years of experience as a Probation Officer, as well as additional for administrative role as set by the Minimum Salary Schedule/Judicial Conference of Indiana.

DescriptionIncumbent serves as Chief Juvenile Probation Officer for Vigo County Juvenile Probation, responsible for supervising work of Juvenile Probation department. Incumbent must have experience as a licensed Probation Officer as the minimum qualifications mandated by the Indiana Office of Court Services would be in effect.
Examples of Duties
Oversees Juvenile Probation department, including analyzing workload, interviewing candidates and making hiring decisions, discipline, training and quality assurance, maintenance of employee records, and communicating and administering personnel programs and procedures.
Directs operations of the probation department, to include assigning cases, supervises progress of cases, files cases with the Juvenile Prosecutor, and gives assistance when needed.
Maintains and supervises own caseload, including being prepared to testify at court hearings, conducts and prepares Pre-Dispositional Reports, maintains SRS, prepares/files modifications, conducts office/placement/home visits.
Maintains records of detention intakes and releases for the State of Indiana through the Quest Program.
Supervises assigned staff, including providing orientation and training, planning, delegating, and controlling work assignments, maintaining discipline and recommending corrective actions as warranted.
Supervises the Coordinator for the Juvenile Drug Court and Coordinator for JDAI, overseeing budgets and grant requirements of both programs.
Oversees operations and budget for the Community Service Program.
Conducts investigations and prepares reports and recommendations as the Court directs and maintains written records of investigations, reports, and recommendations.
Compiles and submits quarterly statistics, Racial and Ethnic Disparities (RED), Annual Operations reports, and any other reports mandated by the Office of Court Services.
Receives and examines complaints of allegations concerning matters covered by juvenile law and makes preliminary inquiries and investigations.
Implements informal adjustments.
Prepares and submits predisposition reports required for dispositional hearing under juvenile law.
Supervises and assists by all suitable methods a child placed on probation or in Probation Officer’s care by order of the Court or other legal authority.
Maintains complete records of Probation Officer’s work and complies with any order of the Court concerning collection, protection, and distribution of any money or other property.
Coordinates staff development and continuing education, ensuring proper maintenance of professional status for Probation Officers.
Updates policies and procedures when needed.
Trained in Evidence Based Practices and IYAS certified.
Performs related duties as assigned and/or required by I.C. 11-13-1-3.
Typical Qualifications
Baccalaureate Degree in Criminal Justice or related field.
Possession of State certification as a Probation Officer with continuing completion of all certification requirements.
Must be at least 21 years of age.
Complete knowledge of all local, state, and federal laws applicable to Juvenile probation operations.
Knowledge of treatment programs and services available to clients from government, social, and private agencies.
Working knowledge of standard policies and practices of Vigo County legal process and probation system.
Considerable knowledge of community geography and ability to effectively monitor probationers.
Working knowledge of standard office procedures and computer software applications used by the Courts.
Ability to oversee Juvenile Probation department and supervise staff.
Ability to perform essential functions of the position without posing a direct threat to health and safety.
Ability to operate standard office and/or department equipment.
Ability to assess the effectiveness of Department programs and activities.
Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.
Ability to maintain confidentiality of department information and records.
Ability to competently serve the public with diplomacy and respect.
Ability to deal with potentially violent individuals and apply appropriate discretion.
Ability to compile, collate, or classify data and make determinations based on data analyses.
Ability to occasionally work extended hours and travel for training.
Possession of a valid driver’s license and a demonstrated safe driving record.
