Job InformationJob Summary:
Performs assigned duties, under direction of experienced personnel, to gain knowledge and experience required to become a Certified Police Officer. Responsibilities include providing aid and safeguarding all members of the University of Chicago community, conducting routine patrols, investigating criminal activity, enforcing traffic regulations, and responding to emergencies.
All applicants are required to submit a cover letter, resume/CV, and an unofficial college transcript or a copy of their college diploma as part of their application. Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to take the written exam, which will be conducted on a rolling basis beginning in August 2024. Successful candidates will also undergo a physical agility test and may be invited to a virtual panel interview.
Responsibilities:
Safely operate department equipment on patrol; conduct periodic premise checks; assist with investigations.
Obey lawful orders of superiors; respond promptly to assigned calls for police service.
Prepare clear, accurate, and complete reports of activities.
Conduct accident and criminal investigations; protect scenes; aid the injured.
Identify, pursue, apprehend, and assist in the prosecution of violators of laws.
Issue citations for motor vehicle violations and assist motorists.
Help evacuate persons from dangerous areas and secure buildings during emergencies.
Complete assigned training programs and qualify with required weapons.
Establish rapport with the University Community to enhance understanding of police functions.
Competencies:
Operate and maintain law enforcement tools and equipment.
Effectively deal with emergency situations and unusual human conduct.
Work independently or as part of a team under stress.
Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Maintain effective working relationships with the public and enforcement officials.
React effectively during conflicts and emergencies.
Safely defend self or others in hostile situations.
Additional RequirementsEducation, Experience, or Certifications:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college required.
Successful completion of the Basic Law Enforcement Officers' Training course within six months of hire.
Attainment of Illinois Law Enforcement Certification within six months of hire.
Successful completion of the University of Chicago Police Department Field Training Program within eighteen months of hire.
Valid Illinois driver's license required.
Completion of First Aid and CPR training within twelve months of hire.
Successful completion of the POWER test or POWER Card issued within six months of application.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
High stress environment; outdoor weather exposure.
Requires physical exertion including running, standing, and lifting.
Effective audio-visual discrimination for quick observations.
Must not have significant hearing loss.
Pay Rate:
$33.87 per hour.
