The Princeton University Art Museum, one of the nation’s preeminent cultural institutions in an academic setting, seeks applications for the position of full-time Collections Cataloguer for a 30-month term position to join a team dedicated to improving providing full digital access to the Museum’s drawing collections. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work within the context of an art museum that is intimate in scale yet expansive in scope, supporting one of the most dynamic exhibition programs on any college campus and a program of educational activities and events that continues to grow in energy and impact each year.The Cataloguer will be responsible for the full cataloguing of the Princeton University Art Museum’s drawings collection. Information will be recorded in the Museum’s collections information management system, The Museum System(r) (TMS), utilizing best practices in the cataloging of works of art. As part of the Museum’s Information and Technology department, and reporting to the Manager of Collections Information, the Cataloger will focus on transcribing a critical mass of analog information about the Museum’s drawing collection from source documents such as curatorial files and accession records.Job duties include:Organize, compile, and digitize (as needed) source documents relating to individual works of art in the collectionEnter compiled data in the collections information management system adhering to established standards and guidelinesCreate comprehensive subject tagging and relationships as outlined by best practice in cataloguingConfer regularly with collections information staff and curators to ensure accuracy of information and the use of appropriate authority toolsAttend weekly team meetingsMinimum Requirements:Bachelor’s degree in art, art history, museum studies, information science, or related disciplineOne to three years’ demonstrated experience cataloguing works of art within a collections information systemAbility to work independently and efficiently to produce consistent, high-quality results over long-term projectA high degree of organization, self-motivation, and great attention to detail is criticalExcellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skillsInterest in museums, art history, visual cultureProficiency using multiple operating systems (Windows and Mac OSX) and basic software including Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe PhotoshopPreferred Qualifications:Familiarity with drawing techniques and materialsReading knowledge of at least one foreign language, preferably Italian and/or GermanFinalist will be required to successfully complete a background check.About the Museum:With collecting origins dating to the 1750s, the Princeton University Art Museum is one of the finest art museums in the country.
