The La Paz County Attorney’s Office is now accepting applications for the full-time position of
Deputy County Attorney.
Position Summary:
Under the overall direction of the County Attorney and immediate supervision by the Chief Deputy County Attorney, provides professional legal services of considerable difficulty; provides other legal services as required or assigned.Duties and Responsibilities:
Initiates and engages criminal prosecution, and/or initiates civil litigation which includes investigating facts, analyzing facts, applying legal knowledge, planning trial strategy, consulting parties, interviewing expert and lay witnesses and negotiating and resolving litigation prior to trial.Conducts criminal and civil trials on behalf of the County Attorney and represents the County Attorney at administrative and other hearings.Advises law enforcement agencies in criminal matters.Performs legal research and drafts, reviews and prepares legal documents including motions, pleadings, petitions, opinions and demands.Drafts, reviews and prepares appeals and post-conviction relief proceedings.Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of federal, state and county law, federal, state and county administrative rules, the rules of evidence, criminal rules of procedure, administrative rules, rules of the court, rules of ethics for attorneys and office policy and procedure.Exercises increased authority in decision-making and discretion when negotiating and resolving litigation, and in determining alternative courses of action.Maintains a case management system with electronic software to handle a large volume of cases, meet deadlines and prepare for meetings, court proceedings, hearing and trials and demonstrates a thorough knowledge of specific areas of criminal and/or civil areas of practice.Performs other job-related duties as assigned.Education & Experience:
Juris DoctorateAdmission to the State Bar of ArizonaPass a background investigation.Minimum Experience:
Deputy County Attorney I:Deputy County Attorney II:
Minimum of two (2) years of relevant legal experience.Deputy County Attorney III:
Minimum of four (4) years of relevant legal experience.Knowledge, Skill & Ability:
Knowledge of civil, criminal, constitutional, or administrative law.Laws, court decisions, and rules of evidence and procedure.Presenting and arguing cases in court and ability to handle unanticipated problems.Principles, methods, materials, practices and references in utilizing legal research.Legal and professional ethics.Skill in applying legal analysis, research and writing techniques to draft clear, concise, and organized legal correspondence, memoranda, documents and pleadings.Interviewing witnesses to obtain facts.Researching and analyzing legal documents and instruments.Developing and acting on sound legal strategies.Presenting and arguing cases in court.Effectively and efficiently negotiating the just resolution of assigned cases.Developing and maintaining effective working relationships with others.For access to the La Paz County Job Opportunities and Employment Application, please view the current employment opportunities on our website:
