Job Summary/Basic FunctionThe School of Music at Middle Tennessee State University invites applicants for a full-time, 11-month, tenure-track faculty position (#131310) as Director of Bands at the rank of assistant or associate professor. The start date for the position is August 1, 2025.
The successful candidate will be well-versed in contemporary approaches to athletic band pedagogy and programming, promote a student-centered learning environment, and positively represent the department and university to the broader community.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead planning, instruction, and administrative coordination of the MTSU Band of Blue and other athletic bands.
Serve as the primary conductor for the MTSU Symphonic Band.
Teach courses in music education and/or conducting, which may include courses in band materials and administration, marching band techniques, and other instrumental techniques courses.
Work collaboratively with School of Music faculty and staff in service of the University Bands and Athletic Bands.
Promote the department and university through active recruiting and public performance.
Participate in institutional service and maintain an active record of research or creative activity.
Required EducationA terminal degree in music or a closely related field is required by the appointment date.
Other DesirablesApplicants with the following will receive special consideration:
Experience as a high school or college band director, including extensive experience with marching band instruction.
Experience as a concert band conductor.
Experience in drill design or arranging for athletic bands.
Collegiate teaching experience in related coursework.
