Job SummaryThe Academic Advisor will support the enrollment, retention, engagement, and graduation of Junior and Senior year students. Under the general supervision of the Managing Director, this individual will provide academic advising and success coaching to upper-division undergraduate students in all majors in the College. The Academic Advisor will build rapport, ease transition, and support retention by advising students on academic requirements and procedures, providing support for students facing a variety of moderately complex institutional and personal problems, connecting students to appropriate resources on campus to foster student success, and advocating for the needs of individual students and groups of students.Key ResponsibilitiesProvide holistic academic advising and support to a cohort of students during their last 60 units.Effectively advise students individually and in groups on topics such as preparing and completing the change/declare major, graduation application procedures, graduation date change, general education requirements, academic notification, disqualification and reinstatement, by remaining current with university policies, procedures, and frequently used forms from key student service areas.Implement an asset-based and strengths-based approach while using a case management strategy to establish a working relationship that includes regular meetings, careful documentation, tracking of student progress, and assessment of student success.Monitor academic progress by leveraging early support systems.Implement a student communication plan that aligns with university policies, deadlines, events, and specific supports needed at certain times in the semester.Participate in college and university-wide programs and events that support student success as directed by the Student Success Center and Undergraduate Advising and Success (UAS).Provide academic advising during orientation.Knowledge, Skills & AbilitiesBasic principles of individual and group behavior, and techniques and methods of interviewing/connecting with students for the purposes of effective holistic academic advising.Strong advising skills, including demonstrated excellence in active listening and in helping individuals with problem identification, problem solving, conflict resolution, and decision making.Effective communication skills (both written and verbal) with individuals/groups. Ability to present clear and concise information. Excellent customer-service skills.Ability to advise students individually or in groups on routine matters.Ability to communicate with constituents in a professional and respectful manner.Demonstrate sensitivity to cultural diversity and commitment to equity.Required QualificationsEquivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field.Two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field. A master’s degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience.Preferred QualificationsMaster’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Counseling, Student Affairs, or related area.Equivalent of two years progressively professional student services work experience.Experience working in an advising office/center, preferably a high volume and fast-paced work environment.Experience working with students, staff, faculty, and administrators from a diverse background.Experience with university and college advising policies and procedures.CompensationClassification: Student Services Professional IIAnticipated Hiring Range: $4,841/month - $5,250/monthCSU Salary Range: $4,841/month - $6,884/month
