MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
The Assistant County Attorney III position requires a post-graduate degree of Juris Doctor from an accredited law school preceded by a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited educational institution and six or more years of relevant experience, or equivalent. In addition, the position requires admission to practice before the Minnesota Supreme Court and less courts of the State and Federal District Court. The Assistant County Attorney III must complete at least fifteen additional credit hours of coursework annually to meet the requirements of the Rules of the State Board of Continuing Legal Education. A background check is required. A driver’s license is required. The finalist for a position vacancy will be required to pass a criminal history investigation at County expense prior to beginning employment with Washington County.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
This Assistant County Attorney III position will provide legal advice and legal services to all areas of the Washington County Attorney Office, including:
Perform the traditional prosecutorial function concerning both juvenile and adult criminal cases;
Assist in the training and advising of law enforcement attendant to the investigative function that they perform;
Provide direction and advice concerning public safety education as it relates to special civil and criminal prosecutions;
Other responsibilities as determined by the County Attorney.
DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE:
Licensed to practice law in the state of Minnesota
Experience in public sector law practice in Minnesota
Experience prosecuting all the following types of cases: homicide, weapon-related cases, criminal sexual conduct, domestic violence, and property crimes

ANTICIPATED HIRING RANGE:
$119,246.40 – $162,011.20 Annually
JOB SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Division Chief, the Assistant County Attorney III performs professional legal services for the Washington County Board of Commissioners and other Washington County boards, commissions and departments; prosecutes criminal and delinquency cases; provides legal representation in civil suits; and provides legal services for child support enforcement and paternity proceedings. The Assistant County Attorney III trains, advises and counsels Assistant County Attorney IIs and Is, as well as paralegal staff. Work assignments provide the opportunity to use knowledge and skills obtained through prior experience and education. An Assistant County Attorney III is the highest level in the Assistant County Attorney classification series and is expected to work on the most difficult, complex and important cases.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work performed by the Assistant County Attorney III may require extended use of a keyboard, standing to make presentations to the court, expressing ideas and giving directions orally, receiving detailed information through oral communication, and lifting boxes up to 25 pounds. There is pressure associated with appearing in court and public speaking. The Assistant County Attorney III frequently works in a normal climate controlled office with adequate lighting and a moderate noise level or in a courtroom.
