This is an opportunity to join our expanding Legal Service team. We are looking for a Solicitor experienced in all aspects of Litigation to provide a comprehensive service to support the Legal Service Manager in the provision of legal advice to officers and members working towards the Council’s ambitions vision to improve the city. The successful candidate will represent the Council in both the County Court and the Magistrates Court and in tribunals. They will also instruct Counsel as required.
We are looking for an enthusiastic litigator who would welcome the opportunity to advise officers and members on a variety of contentious matters including prosecutions in the Magistrates Court, applications for Injunctions on the County Court, defence of licensing appeals, applications for closure orders and assisting Housing Officers with complex possession cases.
We are looking for a solicitor or barrister who will be able to give legal advice to the Council’s Regulatory Committees and Sub-Committees and will assist officers in drafting relevant reports to these committees. Ability to quickly research and confidently advise on all matters of law affecting a District Council is desirable.
The ideal candidate will:
Be a qualified Solicitor or Barrister.
Have experience of local government law and how it affects the framework within which the public sector operates.
Have experience of advising members and providing general advice to officers as required on a variety of areas of law.
Have experience of assisting with the drafting of reports to Executive and other relevant committees and external bodies.
Have a good understanding of how local government projects are funded.
Be able to demonstrate a good understanding of the Anti-Social Behaviour Crime and Policing Act 2014.
Have experience of representing clients in the County Court.
Have a good understanding of Housing Law, in particular possessions proceedings and powers to tackle anti-social behaviour.
Have an appreciation of the Council’s licensing powers or a desire to learn about our regulatory powers and obligations.
