Full-Time Limited Term - Photo Editor/Photo Journalist

A photo editor would work with photographers, editors, reporters, and the visual team to bolster KQED’s high-impact visual journalism and related content. The photo editor would foster exceptional photo and video storytelling both within news stories and on various engagement platforms while also coaching visual journalists. This editor manages a small team and is critical in delivering content for many stories so will be relied upon to take photos and go out on assignment, as well. In addition, they would help ensure that KQED delivers high-quality, sophisticatedly sequenced images on multiple platforms.One essential qualification for this position would be someone with experience thinking about what it means to choose specific photos, who we are representing in the selection, and what the implications are for a photo choice. This position would lead internal conversations on ethical issues regarding imagery and guide the newsroom on ethics policies.KQED envisions a public media organization with a culture that centers on human dignity, equity, and belonging. This role is a Full-Time limited term 3 month position.Annual Salary Range: $93,000- $116,000This role will work hybrid between working in
KQED's newly renovated headquarters
and working remotely. KQED requires employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.Essential Functions:Coordinates with reporters and editors across KQED to ensure accurate and engaging photo (or video) coverage of assignmentsPhotographs assignments, as neededManages the KQED News photographer, and KQED News’s visual internship programWorks with the photographer, Digital News Assignment Editor, and other stakeholders across various KQED departments to finalize photo and custom illustration requestsEnsures the quality and accuracy of our photos and captionsNewsImage administrator, train staff and create and update staff loginsActs as liaison between photographers, editors, reporters and sources to coordinate and schedule photoshootsIdentifies and advises editors of possible feature photos or photo essays, both on KQED.org or standalone items on engagement platformsPitches visual essays for projects and breaking newsHelps direct and coordinate photographers for breaking news and in disaster zonesPhoto edits images from photographers in the field for breaking news eventsCoordinates with social media team to create engaging visual postsWorks with freelancers to assign and manage assignmentsManage freelance photo budget across KQEDManage licensing requestsEdits photos in Adobe Lightroom/Photoshop as neededKnowledge/Experience Required:Excellent written and oral communication skillsAt least one year experience in a similar role in a newsroom or news environment, bilingual newsroom preferredProven collaboration skills — which are essential in working with fellow KQED staffers across departments and with partner organizationsExperience navigating the front and back end of a content management systemAbility to work on their own and as part of a teamAbility to stay focused, organized and proactiveFamiliarity with AP styleExperience with copy editing multimedia content such as graphics, interactives or videos
