Under the general direction of the Vice President for Finance, the full-time Controller is responsible for the accounting and financial reporting operations of Hood College. The Controller develops, implements, and updates accounting policies and procedures, monitors compliance, and provides support to the Senior Team, faculty, staff, and students.

Supervisory Responsibilities (15%)
Manages an accounting team that includes a director, student accounts manager, payroll accountant, a general accountant and an accounting assistant. May supervise student workers. Responsibilities include regular 1:1 and team meetings, the annual performance review process and timesheet and PTO approval.Organizational development of the accounting team, development and documentation of standard procedures, and cross training (ex. Payroll and Accounts Payable) of the team to ensure efficient and continuous operations.Participates and presents at Senior Team; Planning, Budgeting, and Assessment Committee; and Audit & Risk Management and Finance & Facilities Board of Trustee committee meetings as required. Participates in bi-monthly check-ins with the Investment Manager and attends quarterly Investment Committee meetings.Fiscal and Accounting Operations (40%)
Oversees the treasury, endowment management, payroll, student accounts (receivables), accounts payable, general accounting, and budgeting functions.Assures that transactions are recorded accurately, timely, and in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles.Assures that all general ledger accounts are reconciled monthly, quarterly, and annually and that all discrepancies are resolved in a timely manner.Prepares account analysis and related journal entries monthly for net asset releases.Oversees the following other account analysis and related journal entries:Endowment unitization and UPMIFA - annuallyDebt and capital lease roll-forward - quarterlyContributions receivable - quarterlyHealth insurance expense and health account reconciliation - monthlyProjects (temporarily restricted funds and grants) roll-forward - monthlySplit-interest agreements roll-forward - annually
Calculates pooled endowment gifts to be transferred to investments on a quarterly basis.Issues monthly and quarterly financial statements for distribution to management, bank, and to outside organizations as required.Manages financial statement, Uniform Guidance, I-6 and Howard P. Rawlings Educational Excellence Award audits to assure timely completion and satisfactory outcome.Works with auditors and provides required documentation to ensure timely completion of audited financial statements and submission of Uniform Guidance.Budget Development and Oversight (25%)
Actively participates as a standing member of the Planning, Budgeting and Assessment Committee.Assists with the development of the Fiscal Year Plan and Budget Book presented to the Board of Trustees.Implements and maintains the annual operating budget as approved by the Board of Trustees.Maintains a system for developing, reporting, and monitoring annual departmental operating budgets, financial and cash projections.Prepare monthly budget projections (pro forma) throughout the year.Prepares monthly reconciliations of budgeted operating results to change in unrestricted net assets from operating activities as reported in the statement of activities, and distribute and present to management.Tax Reporting (20%)
Oversees preparation of IRS Form 990-T, Exempt Organization Business Income Tax Return, including presentation of draft IRS Form 990 to audit committee of Board of Trustees to assure they have time to review/comment prior to submission of final tax return to the IRS. Assures submission by due date.Prepares and files the EZ Audit after the Uniform Guidance audit is completed.Oversees submission of Data Collection Form to the Federal Audit Clearing House after the Uniform Guidance audit is completed.Prepares the annual reports to the Maryland Higher Education Commission on the Joseph A. Sellinger program.Supplies requested financial data to the Institutional Research and Assessment Office for the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) survey.Prepares and files the Maryland Charitable Organization Registration.Qualifications

Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree and 7-10 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.Higher education experience is required.Master's degree in accounting or business or CPA is preferred.Knowledge of applicable regulations and best practices, including generally accepted accounting principles, IRS regulations, Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), federal and state wage and hour laws.Highly service-oriented and ability to effectively communicate with individuals at all levels of the organization.Strong collaboration skills, especially with Financial Aid and Institutional Advancement departments.Student-centric.Strong sense of responsibility and professionalism.Clear understanding and appreciation for confidentiality of financial, student, and payroll data.Ability to work autonomously as well as to recognize when to seek guidance and support.
Technology Skills
Proficient in MS Office tools (Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), e-mail and Internet.Proficient in accounting and payroll systems; Great Plains, and UKG preferred.Ability to learn new applications quickly including organization-wide information systems and department-specific software applications.
Language Skills
Strong oral and written communication skills.Ability to effectively provide information and positively respond to questions from both external and internal customers both in person and by phone.Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups.
Mathematical Skills
Proficient with statistical and financial concepts.Must have the ability to apply those concepts to tracking, projections, goal setting and interpreting reports.Must be able to draw conclusions from reports and make cost effective decisions regarding programs.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a number of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.Ability to work independently and as a member of a group in developing and executing project plans. Ability to work in theoretical arena and apply logic as appropriate.
Compensation
This is a position with an annual starting salary range of $99,000 to $110,000 depending on circumstances including an applicant's skills and qualifications, certain degrees and certifications, prior job experience, training, and other relevant factors. Hood College has provided a compensation range representing its good faith estimate of what the College may pay for the position at the time of posting. The College may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range.
