Duties include interior painting and exterior painting, repair and preparation of surfaces prior to painting and staining by washing, scraping, sanding, sandblasting, or other means as necessary. Mixes, matches and blends various paints, enamels, lacquers, varnishes, stains and special protective coatings to achieve desired color, consistency and drying properties Examples of Duties Performs painting and staining work involving the repair, maintenance and construction of buildings, structures, walls, partitions, fences, furniture or equipment using a brush, spray gun or other application. Cleans and prepares surfaces for finishing, utilizing appropriate materials and techniques. Makes repairs to drywall, plaster, stucco and concrete surfaces. Caulks cracks and other openings as required. Applies primers and finish coats, preservatives and waterproofing materials to interior and exterior of building, furniture, machinery and equipment, utilizing appropriate techniques and materials. Erects and removes portable mechanical scaffolding. Places and removes required barriers and safety signs at job site. Climbs ladders and scaffolding. Cleans and maintains brushes, containers, spray guns and related equipment. Properly stores and disposes of paints, solvents and materials.Glazes windows, sashes and other openings using appropriate materials and techniques. Removes and replaces hardware and fixtures and cover/plates as required. Mixes paint, lacquers and allied products. Ability to mix, match and blend paints and stains to desired color, consistency and drying properties. Performs minor repairs and routine preventative maintenance on compressors, spray guns and other related equipment. Moves or assists in moving desks, furniture, cabinets, etc. in areas where work is performed. Performs a variety of other manual work related to the maintenance of building and grounds. Ability to work while wearing required personal safety equipment which includes gloves, hardhat, respirator, safety glasses, safety harness, safety vest, and steel toe shoes or boots. Ability to follow safety guidelines and follow procedures for the proper use of all safety equipment. Maintains painting record/logs: color, finish, brand, etc., match to specific locations and/or structures. Maintains and files MSDS for all products used. Considerable knowledge of safety standards/precautions to painting, including but not limited to lead paint laws & requirements, and ability to read and follow MSDS recommendations and requirements. Assists laborers, technicians, carpenters, or other skilled trades persons within the Department and/or City as required and assigned. Performs related work as required.Typical QualificationsHigh school diploma required and five (5) years of experience in exterior/interior painting of building surfaces and furniture. Experience at a level equivalent to journeyman painter or similar work experience. Experience should include the repair and preparation of surfaces using a variety of techniques related to the job responsibilities listed above. Considerable knowledge of commercial and industrial applications and appropriate coatings for metal, wood, and associated materials for surfaces exposed to adverse weather and moisture conditions. Driver's License Requirement: Valid Florida Driver's License Classification E. Supplemental InformationThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee is regularly required to communicate and exchange information with others. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, lifting, pulling, kneeling, and crouching for long periods of time and performs strenuous physical labor under adverse field conditions. The employee must frequently lift or move items up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift or move items up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, ability to adjust focus, and see various colors including red and green. The position requires good manual dexterity (hand, hand with arm, two hands) and multi-limb coordination.We offer a complete benefits package to full-time employees including paid health care, dental, vision, retirement, deferred compensation plans, life insurance, long-term disability, and up to 13 paid holidays. The City offers 2 weeks of vacation and 2 weeks of sick leave, which accrues bi-weekly from your first day of work. In addition, the City provides 24 hours of time off for wellness and family, plus $300 per quarter in wellness or childcare reimbursements for non-probationary, full-time employees.Furthermore, the City pays out accrued leave at 100% for non-probationary employees who leave in good standing and provide a minimum of 2 weeks notice. While there are limits on the vacation leave paid, it is at a minimum of 480 hours and there is no limit on the sick leave paid out.
