Proudly serving the Frederick community, Transit provides essential transportation services to the County to connect people to employment, medical services, education, and more. Transit offers public transit, paratransit, and commuter assistance services throughout Frederick County, MD.

Non-exempt (compensatory and/or overtime eligible); full-time; 40 hours per week; varying shifts between 5:00 a.m. - 10:30 p.m. (shift and Saturday differential eligible); Monday - Saturday; grant-funded; full-benefits

Sign-on Bonus = $5,000 total to be paid in three increments. 1st $1,000 installment paid after 30 days of employment; 2nd $2,000 installment paid after successful completion of probationary period; 3rd $2,000 installment paid after 1 year of satisfactory performance.

This position is responsible for operating a transit-type bus or other Transit vehicle to transport the general public, including people with disabilities. Supervision is received from the Operations Supervisor and/or the Operations Manager.

NOTE: The upper pay range reflects possible wage rates for internal County transfers and promotions. For transfers and promotions, wage rates are calculated per County policy.

Transport customers within approximately a 100-mile radius on deviated and fixed route assignments on various vehicle and service typesAssist passengers in boarding and departing the vehicle when necessaryPerform pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspectionsClean and fuel the assigned vehicle and perform minor maintenance functions, including maintaining a clean working environmentRecord and report needed repairs to supervisorsRecord and report mileage and ridershipMaintain a daily activity trip summary and other related reportsCollect survey data as neededParticipate in job-related training and seminarsServe on staff committeesProvide occasional office assistanceCollect fares and tickets from passengers as appropriatePerform other related duties as requiredTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Possession of a valid class A or B commercial driver's license (CDL) with passenger endorsement and successful completion of the airbrakes knowledge and skills test, or an equivalent license from another state - copy of current driving record is required at time of interviewKNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES:

Ability to maintain County Authorized Driver privilegesAbility to satisfy all Department of Transportation requirements as they apply to periodic physical examinations and licensing standardsAbility and willingness to learn First Aid, CPR and other job-related skills, and to maintain current certificationsKnowledge of Maryland state and local traffic laws and regulationsKnowledge of roads and communities in the Frederick County area, and able to effectively read maps and follow directionsAccurate math and clerical skills, with the ability to properly complete mileage and vehicle use reports and other departmental record-keepingEffective spoken and written (English) communication skills, including the ability to effectively use telephone and utilize two-way radio communications in compliance with FCC regulations, ability to accurately follow written and spoken instructions and ability to effectively convey information to passengersAbility and willingness to learn to operate all fleet vehiclesAbility and willingness to work in varied driving conditions, as long as the weather has not caused service to be suspendedAbility to develop and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the general publicPREFERENCE MAY BE GIVEN FOR:

Driving experience transporting passengersPHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS / WORKING CONDITIONS:

Physical requirements include the ability to assist persons as they board and depart the vehicle, to secure wheelchairs on board, and to perform general vehicle maintenanceWhile working in this position, the employee is constantly sitting, pushing and pulling up to and over 300 pounds, reaching and driving; frequently walking, moving, climbing, descending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and making repetitive motions; occasionally lifting up to 20 lbs and rarely lifting between 20-50 pounds.While working in this position, the employee is constantly working outdoors, in temperatures above 100 degrees, in temperatures below 32 degrees; frequently walking on uneven ground and exposed to noise; occasionally working indoors, potentially exposed to infectious diseases and required to wear protective equipment.Available for varied working hours as neededThis position is subject to post-accident, reasonable suspicion, return to duty and random drug and alcohol testingThis position is considered "essential," therefore, the employee is expected, when directed, to report to work in the event of a weather emergency (or other circumstances) when County offices are closed.The grant that funds this position will determine the duration of this positionEXAMINATION PROCESS (may include):
