Job SummaryUnder the direction of the applicable Product Development Supervisor, the Product Designer is responsible for design, design detailing, and modeling of custom and standard products related to all product lines, such as Telecom, Automotive, and Hand Tools. Uses CAD to create concepts, details, assemblies, and production drawings. Performs calculations, tolerance stack-ups, and resin selections. Writes Design and Product specifications, and DFMEA's. Manages Engineering tasks for assigned projects. Professionally communicate
Essential Functions:Main Goal. Create/Change Engineering drawings. Design and develop innovative, competitive, plastic routing and clipping fasteners that meet the Design Specifications as directed.Specifications. Maintain design specifications as a living document.Team members.On Time / On Budget. Design and develop new products within defined timetables with no (zero) design changes after product launch, on budget.Draft or validate Specifications. Write or validate Design Specifications, DFMEA's, DVP&R's, and Purchase 3D CAD.Design new products using appropriate CAD software.Outputs. Use CAD to create concepts, details, assemblies, and production drawings.PDM. Perform CAD document and data control in our PDM software.ERP - Use our ERP system for product look-up and purchasing requests.Design reviews. Schedule, record details, and distribute summaries of Engineering Design Reviews.Strive for Perfection. Provide CAD models that are free from model errors, geometry and/or surface holes or overlaps, circular references, and corrupt files. Check your own work.GD&T. Use Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing to control product profiles and locations.Tolerance Stackups. Calculate tolerance stackups to control the fit between mating parts.Mold Flow Analysis. Request mold fill analysis at critical stages of new product designs to ensure an optimized part, mold and mfg. process.Request Patent Searches. Request patent searches for new designs and review patents before final submission.Work effectively in a team environment. Effectively work with and guide Engineering personnel to obtain project-supporting services.Maintain good records. Maintain up-to-date accurate records in a journal and in project documentation as Design tests.Work with the Validation Department to Design tests and develop test fixtures to measure actual part performance against design specs.Validate product performance. Validate actual product performance against design specs.
Other FunctionsOffer suggestions or ideas on new products & new tools, company & department procedures, and personal & professional goals.Keep current with new relevant technologies by attending trade shows, seminars and reading technical news.Attend seminars, training and read publications to improve personal and business skills.Provide part views and data for Transportation catalogs and Patent applications.Proofread engineering patents and engineering documents.Provide technical support of the Routing and Clipping Fasteners.Work in harmony with other HT personnel - be a team player.Support efforts to organize and maintain Engineering work & storage areas.Conduct information searches for competitive products, competitive companies, customers, and vendors.Export CAD data into universal data formats to satisfy customer & vendor requests.Electronic CAD data transfers to customers and vendors websites or through 3rd party data exchangeParticipate in mold design reviews prior to cutting tool steel to optimize part, mold, and mfg. process.Utilize current ERP system to lookup product information and initiate purchasing requests.Understand and contribute to the company and department objectives and goals.Reports monthly project progress to VP of Engineering.Design for optimized part & mold tool performance.Using good design practices, create optimized solid model geometry; applying maximum drafts, maximum rounds, and minimum wall thicknesses so as to promote minimum process cycle times, and maximum part performance. areas such as: intricate tool inserts and stepped parting lines.Use the maximum practical angles to form telescoping shut off surfaces.Design for Optimized Tooling. Create solid model geometry to optimize tooling, providing low maintenance tooling insert features, and providing low maintenance parting line shutoffs, to promote maximum tooling life.Simplify the injection mold during part design. Create solid model geometry minimizing cross-slide action to reduce the complexity of the mold.Monitor the revision or construction of rapid prototype and limited production molds.
Qualifications (skills, knowledge, experience)Minimum of a High School Diploma, Preferred is an Associate Degree in Mechanical Design, Plastics Engineering Technology or equivalent.1+ years of 3D CAD software skills, classes or on-the-job experience.Excellent technical writing skills required.Excellent verbal communication skills required.High mechanical aptitude.Software skills in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.Capable and willing to travel by vehicle or airplane up to approximately two to four times per year.
