The Opportunity

This executive role directs the planning, organization, implementation, and control of underwriting related functions including (but not limited to) underwriting acceptability guidelines, premium accuracy programs, underwriting execution, support and service, underwriting quality, regulatory change management, documents and related risk and compliance activities. Leads the continuous improvement and transformation of the underwriting function including providing the business direction for modernization of processes, data, and technology. Manages through subordinates the effectiveness and efficiency of all underwriting related activities. Contributes to the underwriting philosophy and policies, as well as the development of underwriting strategy holistically.

What you’ll do:

Responsible for directing underwriting functions such as underwriting acceptability guidelines, premium accuracy programs, underwriting quality, etc. ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

Develops and implements Underwriting policy, philosophy, and strategy holistically in collaboration with pricing and product strategies in adherence with compliance requirements.

Leads and guides through the ideation cycle, evaluating feasibility and viability of innovative concepts, build of business case, and securing of funding to support effort.

Drives team performance data against goals, reports results through regular routines, and makes modifications as needed.

Develops and implements strategies and initiatives to contribute to Underwriting and P&C goals and objectives.

Serves as a business educator in relation to operating results, emerging trends, and regulatory compliance factors; responsible for sharing best practices to contribute to the on-going improvement of P&C’s operating efficiency.

Directs completion of comprehensive analysis of operating results, resources, and processes to identify, recommend and implement both tactical and strategic action plans with substantial impact on the business.

Consults with P&C Underwriting and Pricing, Claims, Compliance and Legal to ensure correct interpretation and application of company policies as well as regulatory requirements.

Develops and leads underwriting quality function including program implementation, parameter development, reporting cadences, and execution. Through subordinates develops the risk-based quality plan, reviews quality results and incorporates / actions quality recommendations for continuous improvement.

Oversees and monitors annual countrywide team budget, including any third-party resource or data spend and necessary IT spend.

Forecasts and plans appropriate resources for countrywide team including any third party / supplemental resources. Acts as Business Relationship Owner for a variety of contracts to include Data, Process, People. Accountable for ongoing management and optimization of contract spend. Renegotiates contracts as appropriate to benefit organization.

Directs identification, facilitation, and coordination of education programs across stakeholder groups to include National and State Product Management, Claims, Distribution and Sales and Agency.

Works to build Underwriting brand within USAA, including educating on the value of underwriting activities to improve book of business profitability.

Builds and oversees a team of employees for assigned functional area through ongoing execution of recruiting, development (e.g., professional designations i.e., CPCU), retention, coaching and support, performance management, and managerial activities.

Ensures risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.

What you have:

Bachelor’s degree OR 4 years of related experience (in addition to the minimum years of experience required) may be substituted in lieu of degree.

10 years of progressive property and casualty insurance experience developing strategies, managing major initiatives, and delivering results within a complex matrix environment.

6 years of people leadership experience in a commercial and/or personal lines property and casualty insurance function to include building, managing and/or developing high-performing teams.

Executive-level business acumen in the areas of underwriting, policy, pricing, product and/or insurance industry practices, emerging trends, major issues and regulatory considerations.

Experience developing and utilizing accelerated underwriting processes and reducing expenses including the use of data analytics and third-party providers. Deep technical knowledge of underwriting systems.

Experience overseeing the development of underwriting, product and/or operations and/or policy rules, guidelines and strategies for new and existing programs and products.

Skilled in directing the comprehensive analysis of underwriting, product and/or policy results, resources, and processes to identify, recommend and implement both tactical and strategic underwriting action plans.

Experience applying proactive measures to refine underwriting product and/or operations and/or policy rules and guidelines, including utilizing analytics and metrics to develop insights.

What sets you apart:

US military experience through military service or a military spouse/domestic partner.

Demonstrated experience leading large program efforts and driving change adoption in a matrixed organization.

Demonstrated experience with designing 3rd party data driven and model-informed digital underwriting programs.

Demonstrated experience building business cases, gaining resources, and implementing new underwriting capabilities.

What we offer:

Compensation:

USAA has an effective process for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the salary range based on your experience and market position. The salary range for this position is: $188,330.00-338,990.00.

Employees may be eligible for pay incentives based on overall corporate and individual performance or at the discretion of the USAA Board of Directors.

Long Term Incentive Plan: Cash payment for Executive level roles only, representing a cash payment which is both time and performance based.
