School Bus Lead Driver

"Job Summary
Provide safe and efficient transportation for students. Model a positive attitude which has a positive impact on students and the educational programs of the county. In addition to all bus driver responsibilites listed below, the lead driver will: Serve as a trainer and provide training for new bus drivers as well as work with current drivers, as assigned by the Supervisor of Transportation, to address additional training needs. Work with the Supervisor of Transportation for route efficiency or route adjustments
Essential Duties
Abides by all Federal, State, and Local laws and regulations pertaining to pupil transportation.
Maintains an orderly atmosphere for the students riding the school bus.
Reports in writing all incidents of misconduct to the appropriate school principal.
Keeps the bus clean inside and out.
Performs a pre-trip inspection of the school bus prior to their bus run each morning and each afternoon.
Reports promptly to the Bus Shop all needed repairs.
Physically inspects the bus interior after each bus run for any evidence of vandalism, left items, or students remaining on the bus.
Maintains the prescribed regular service schedule for the bus assigned.
Maintains a regular time schedule on the prescribed bus route with students being picked up and discharged only at authorized stops.
Contacts the Transportation Department prior to making any changes in the assigned route or time schedule.
Attends the pre-school workshop, safety meetings, and all other called meetings.
Completes all reports and time schedules accurately and promptly.
Transports only authorized passengers.
Strives to maintain an open and cordial relationship with students, parents, co-workers, and administrators.
Performs such other duties and assumes such other responsibilities as the Supervisor of Transportation and/or Superintendent may assign.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities Required)
Meet all DOT, DOE, Commonwealth of Virginia and Bedford County requirements for driving a school bus. A Valid Commercial Driver's License with endorsements is required. In addition, a lead driver is required to be a Certified Bus Driver Instructor from the Virginia Department of Education, Office of Pupil Transportation. Training is provided but required.

The school bus driver must be physically able to move within the confines of the bus in order to provide assistance to students.
