Marshall Position Information Banner Position Number 000988 Position Title Electrician Classification Title Electrician Department Facilities & Operations Admin - MU5200 Job Description This position is classified as General Maintenance I (GM I) for applicants without a trades license. Applicants holding a valid trades license (e.g., HVAC, Electrician, Plumbing) will be considered for the General Maintenance II (GM II) level. This position performs a wide range of skilled maintenance tasks including carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and HVAC. The practices preventive maintenance of tools and equipment and follows federal regulations governing safety, environmental protection, hazardous waste disposal, and the use of chemicals and materials common to facilities maintenance or construction. Electrician General Duties: Applies electronic theory, principles of electrical circuits, electrical testing procedures, mathematics, physics, and related subjects to test, troubleshoot, repair and modify all electric and/or electronic equipment on University owned properties. Repairs, installs, and troubleshoots all control systems for motors, lighting, etc, while working with other trades. Repairs/installs and inspects high and low voltage electrical distribution equipment, wiring, and associated hardware inside and outside buildings. Repairs/installs electrical conduit, tubing, wire mold, raceways, and associated accessories including pulling of electrical wiring, cable for computers, and telephone. Repairs/installs circuit breakers, fuses, substation switch gear and transformers. Provides means of access through walls, floors, and other structures as may be required by dismantling or cutting through structural and other physical barriers in order to gain access for repairs or for new installations. Restores assigned work sites to their original condition at the completion of work by removing tools, materials, and debris, drop cloths, and tarpaulins used during the project, returning furniture and equipment to their proper location, setting up equipment that had been dismantled, and coordinating the cleaning, painting, or replacing tile(s) and other structural effects through which holes have been cut. Installs and repairs life safety systems consisting of emergency lighting, exit signage, and backup power generation. Assures adequate, proper, and safe distribution of electrical systems from primary utility, emergency power, through end use. Includes all safety devices, switch gear, and emergency systems. Inspects and repairs wires, and auxiliary equipment, such as circuit breakers, fuses, insulators, and switches for capacities and working condition. Installs and where applicable repairs test equipment, laboratory equipment, laundry and kitchen equipment as required within the university setting. Inspects and repairs carpet cleaners, vacuums, shop vacs, electric power tools, floor buffers, and assorted electronic appliances. Trouble shoots electrical issues for other trades. Installs and maintains outside/security lighting on campus. Reads and interprets schematics, blueprints, and manufacturers specifications. Troubleshoots and repairs electric/electronic equipment, to ensure efficient day to day operation of the university. Maintains an organized work area, which includes cleanliness, safety and security of materials. Works with supervisor on assignments for labor and material expectations. Completes truck and shop inventories as assigned. Required overtime for athletic events, student activities, and emergency call out situations. Operates multi-meters, voltmeters, amp meters, power meters, electric tracking equipment, frequency counters, AC and DC power supplies, soldering and de-soldering equipment. Operates power tools, hand tools, air compressors, jackhammers, backhoes, ditch witch, man lifts. Performs other duties as assigned deemed necessary to meet the needs of Marshall University including performance of work in support of other shops/trades.
