Salary/Hourly wages are determined by verifiable experience. Nature of Work This is skilled work in the operation of heavy motor-driven equipment. Employees in this class are responsible for the safe and efficient operation of heavy equipment. Work in the position requires considerable skill in working to engineering grades, in operating heavy equipment, and in working efficiently so as not to impede the progress of related operations. Supervision consists primarily in the job performance checks made at work sites. Essential Functions and Responsibilities May operate drag-line or equivalent; places and removes pipe. May operate tractor equipped with front end loader and backhoe; operate truck mounted pavement stripping machine. Operates a power grader on construction and maintenance work; blades subgrades to engineering specifications. Operates a heavy duty gasoline or diesel road roller compacting material. May operate a lowboy; supervise the loading and unloading of heavy equipment; transport equipment to and from construction site. May operate a simple flatbed or dump truck, or a variety of minor powered machinery and equipment; may participate generally in the laboring work of the crew as workload demands. Operates front end loader; loads fill, rock, slag, and other construction materials. Performs daily safety inspections of assigned equipment prior to and after use; performs routine service and maintenance. Operates truck carrying fuel, lubricants and lubricating equipment, performs major field lubrication of light, medium and heavy rolling stock and equipment. Follows through directly on routine requests. Performs other related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Completion of the eighth school grade and considerable experience in the operation and maintenance of heavy construction equipment. Possession of a valid Florida Commercial Driver's license with driving record acceptable to the County Driving Policy and insurance program. A comparable amount of training and/or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications. Must be able to comprehend, speak and read the English language. Knowledge, Abilities and Skills Thorough knowledge of the operation, maintenance adaptabilities, limitations, and safety precautions of the particular equipment to which assignment is made. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instruction. Ability to obtain necessary information and to complete accurate accident and other reports. Ability to prepare simple reports. Skill in the operation of complex construction equipment. Ability to operate heavy equipment over rough terrain and to perform manual labor occasionally under adverse weather conditions. Working Conditions Work requires moderate to extreme exposure to one or more disagreeable conditions (i.e., irate customers, inclement weather, excessive noise, extreme temperatures, odors or dust). Risk/Safety Conditions This position requires moderate exposure or risk to physical health and/or physical safety (e.g. exposure to environmentally hazardous material, heavy equipment) This position often requires the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Essential Physical Activities: Bending/stooping, sitting, standing, crouching, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, hearing, seeing up close, seeing far away, kneeling, reaching, pushing/pulling, talking, standing, climbing, finger movement of firm grasping and fine manipulation, repetitive motions, depth perception, balancing, squatting, working at heights .
