Overview

Plans, directs, coordinates and evaluates the operational, fiscal and personnel activities to ensure the provision of high quality, safe patient/family centered care 24 hours a day. Covers multiple geographical areas and treatment modalities including clinic, infusion, and radiation oncology nursing. Advocates for and allocates available resources to promote efficient, effective, safe and compassionate nursing care.

Responsibilities

Provides oversight for multiple geographical areas and care areas such as clinics and procedural units within the Dartmouth Cancer Center (DCC).

Manages the hiring process of managers and supervisors to provide leadership for assigned areas.

Plans adequate staffing and adjustments in alignment with patient volume and clinical needs.

Evaluates and manages the performance of direct reports at managerial and supervisory level, to include coaching and the performance management processes.

Manages the matrix relationships, including but not limited to providing input and feedback to Nurse Educators, Clinical Nurse Specialists, and Clinical Nurse Leaders assigned to the practice area, to ensure clinical competency of staff, quality of patient/family centered care and professional development of clinical staff.

Identifies opportunities for best practices and continued improvement and oversees implementation of such practices.

Responsible for operationalizing best practices in team care coordination.

Proactively assesses safety risks and promotes and models a culture of safety.

Manages supervisory staff and processes to achieve outcomes and organizational goals in regard to clinical quality, patient safety, and patient experience.

Manages to operational budget for multiple units. Monitors patient revenues and expenses and operational expenses and provides required reports to administration.

Provides operational and clinical oversight for St. Johnsbury DCC practice.

Facilitates the work of the Professional Nursing Organization, including facilitating the Practice Area Council. Coaches clinical nurses in professional development and engagement in the Program for Advancing Clinical Excellence (PACE) credentialing program.

Assures that Joint Commission and other applicable regulatory standards are met in the clinical area. Assures that evidenced based practice and nursing practice standards are achieved in the clinical area.

Assumes accountability for maintaining a safe work environment in alignment with Dartmouth-Hitchcock’s commitment to employee safety and regulatory requirements including but not limited to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and applicable state and federal law.

Supports and/or participates in clinical research programs in collaboration with the inter-professional team.

Identifies opportunities throughout the system and works collaboratively with clinical and administrative leaders to standardize practice.

Provides leadership oversight to external organizations as outlined in professional service agreements.

Assists systems leaders with integration using clinical and operational expertise.

Performs other duties as required or assigned.

Qualifications

Graduate from an accredited nursing institution required.

Master’s Degree in Nursing (MSN) is required as well as experience in direct patient care.

Supervisory and/or management experience required.

A minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible management experience in nursing required.

Must obtain and maintain clinical competencies within assigned unit.

Certification in a nursing specialty is strongly preferred as is continuing professional education and participation in professional organizations.

Required Licensure/Certifications

Licensed Registered Nurse in New Hampshire and Vermont required.

Basic Life Support (BLS) or higher per unit specific requirements.
