University Transit Service (UTS) at the University of Virginia's Department of Parking and Transportation is seeking reliable Transit Bus Drivers. Our drivers work within the University Transit Service to provide transportation services to the University of Virginia Community. Strong customer service skills are necessary. Duties include the operation of a transit bus unit on a fixed route as well as transit operation in support of University-wide events. Selected candidates will be required to be able to drive any/all buses and support vehicles in the fleet.
Note about work schedule
: University Transit Service and Parking and Transportation have services that operate 24 hours per day / 7 days a week. This requires that all employees have flexibility with scheduling. More specifically, new hires will be expected to work any and all shifts, as assigned. Shift assignments are determined primarily by seniority scheduling, meaning that successful candidates should expect to be regularly assigned to evening, night, and weekend hours, depending on service level, until seniority has been built.
Qualifications:High school diploma or equivalent required.At least 8 months of prior work experience required. Experience gained during part-time work as a student may be considered.Virginia Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Type A or B with Passenger and Air Brake endorsements or a valid State of Virginia Driver's License and the ability to obtain the CDL with endorsements within the first 45 days of hire required. Must have a positive point balance via a good driving record on existing license.The ability to follow and enforce specific instructions and the ability to communicate effectively with the public and over two-way radio is essential. Applicants must be able to read, write, and speak in the English language.General knowledge of computer usage; ability to type, use email, and interface with web-based systems for payroll and performance management is essential.Safe operation of a transit bus requires sustained sitting, driving, pushing/pulling (steering wheel and various controls), repetitive motion, use of both hands, use of either hand, fine finger manipulation, and wrist movement. Safe operation also includes repetitive motion with both ankles/feet, with both possessing the strength and dexterity to fully depress the service brake and accelerator (right) and turn signal controls (left) present on the transit bus units within the Parking and Transportation fleet. All of these physical requirements are essential to the position.The ability to drive any/all buses in the UTS transit fleet and UTS support vehicles is required.The availability and ability to work overtime and shifts over eight (8) hours when needed is required to meet service hours in Transit Operations.As mentioned above, the ability to accept a flexible work schedule including the potential for evening, night, and weekend hours is a requirement of the position.Compensation:
Compensation for this position starts at $19.00 per hour for any drivers requiring any or all components of CDL training and $20.00 per hour for drivers already holding a CDL Class A or B with Air Brakes and the Passengers endorsement.In addition, predetermined shift differential dependent on hours and days worked is applied on top of hourly base pay.This is a full-time non-exempt position with UVA benefits . Safe operation of a transit bus requires sustained sitting, driving, pushing/pulling (steering wheel and various controls), repetitive motion, use of both hands, use of either hand, fine finger manipulation, and wrist movement. Safe operation also includes repetitive motion with both ankles/feet, with both possessing the strength and dexterity to fully depress the service brake and accelerator (right), and turn signal controls (left) present on the transit bus units within the Parking and Transportation fleet.
Boarding/alighting the transit bus requires the ability to climb stairs (at least one step up/down). Successful operation of ADA Accessible equipment aboard the transit bus requires bending, lifting, and carrying. All of these physical requirements should be considered essential to the position.
Work performed during special events and as part of servicing the equipment requires standing, traveling, and the potential for bending, lifting, and carrying.
