Archaeological Monitor - Field Lead

(HRTitle: Staff Compliance Monitor) based out of our Rocky Mountain Plains subregion (Bismarck, North Dakota; Denver and Fort Collins, Colorado; and Sheridan, Wyoming). This is a distributed position, and individuals not local to these office locations are encouraged to apply. Project work will include working independently, coordinating with construction crews, monitoring construction, keeping detailed records, and documenting cultural resources. It may also include other field tasks. You will inspect construction areas, identify cultural materials, collect data with tablets, record sites using state-specific protocols, and make National Register of Historic Places evaluations. A key element of your job will be to independently supervise an archaeological monitor in the field.This is an on-call, hourly, regular-status, benefitted position for the duration of the monitoring project. Duration of the project will be commensurate with the construction schedule, which will be approximately mid-April to mid-November 2024. You will typically work according to the construction schedule. Daily work will typically vary between 8 to 12 hours, depending on the construction crew’s schedule and needs. Work will typically occur Monday through Saturday, with Sunday off and lodging and per diem covered. This is a multi-year project and returning work is possible every year. After seasonal project completion, SWCA will make best efforts to find extended employment for the candidate on other projects, although it is not guaranteed. Pay ranges from $27.30/hour to $34.65/hour commensurate with experience and role, with overtime paid at time-and-a-half, paid sick-time accrual, paid travel to and from the project location, and single-occupancy lodging. Lodging will be provided in apartments leased by SWCA rather than hotels. Per diem is $59/day.What you will accomplishWork with a construction crew to complete monitoring safely and efficientlyPerform fieldwork (survey, testing, or data recovery) and assist project managers with field tasksCoordinate field crew progress and daily data transferPrepare daily monitoring reportsCollect, organize, and perform quality assurance and quality control for field dataPossibly assist with technical reportingDemonstrate and maintain SWCA’s high standard of scientific ethics and quality assurance, and have the awareness to identify and resolve challenges in creative waysAs a staff compliance monitor, you will be asked to supervise a small crew while conducting archaeological monitoring field work. This includes:Independently assigning and directing the activities of others on behalf of SWCA, often in remote areas without immediate guidance from senior managers, to ensure quality and on-time delivery;Ensuring that employees understand their responsibilities and delegated tasks and being held accountable if crew members under your supervision are not performing their activities correctly, productively, and safely;Serving as a conduit of communication between employees and senior managers, including communicating issues to relevant senior managers;Receiving and resolving complaints from employees in the field; andMonitoring team productivity and providing timely performance feedback, including deciding when disciplinary action is necessary and delivering discipline.Experience and qualifications for successRequiredMinimum of a bachelor’s degree in archaeology, anthropology, or a closely related field is required; a master’s degree is preferredMinimum of 1 year of experience with a range of field methods, such as survey, testing, and excavationAbility to be listed on a project-specific Wyoming BLM survey and testing permit.Current valid driver’s license and the ability to safely operate a four-wheel drive vehicle on rugged back country roadsAbility to travel to a location; ability to conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather, rugged terrain, and often at high altitudes; and ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 poundsAbility to spend several hours per day, up to all day, away from the vehiclePreferredExperience with archaeological monitoring of construction sitesMinimum of 2 years of experience with a range of field methods, such as survey, testing, and excavationAbility to be listed with relevant archaeological permitsSecretary of the Interior qualifiedDemonstrated leadership and supervision abilities, including problem-solving, constructive conflict resolution, and decision makingSWCA Environmental Consultants is a growing employee-owned firm, providing a full spectrum of environmental services.
